Mileage from mud terrain tyres

I am considering buying a set of Cooper S/T's or BFG A/T, but after yet another mud and clay outing yesterday, maybe I should be looking at the STT's or BFG mud’s.

Given the price of rubber, I don't want to overly compromise on tyre longevity for improved mud performance. I know that A/T's typically last up 80,000km to 100,000km and was wondering if members could share their mileages typically achieved with mud terrains. I spend most of my time on tar with the rough stuff limited to weekends. Thanks.

BFG muds

The only thing with the BFG muds is the drone at speed as there are no carpets in the puma to keep out the noise.
Haven't travelled long enough on them to comment on longevity though Puma 110 - gone

Try the Goodyear MTRs - they're every bit as good in the mud but better on road and less noisy than the BFGs

Sorry Laurie, but noise wise, the BFG are much better !!

Have a set of BFG's on the puma,, removed them recently, for a longest road trip, so put the grabbers back on,, and were a tad quiter,,

On the sport, have a set of GY MTR's, and they drown like hell,, even with a lot better soundproofing that the sport has,,

Not used GY's on the Puma,, or BF's on the Sport,, but the Puma's handling caricature is closer to the standard tyre when on the BF's,, than the sport does when on the GY compared to the road tyres

IF only they did BFG mud's in Sport sizes,, No contest for me, BFG every time California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

had a set of bfg mt's on my 1987 td for 3 years and would recomend them to anyone was totally amazed how little wear in that time as to noise levels would say they are no more noisey than my old range masters.
very good road holding too

Running the fleet on BFG's. Been using them for 9 years and find them superb!

Quality control on BFG is not the best, judging on the amount of balance weight you have to put on, but General on the other hand are very good for balance and a lot less money and better in the wet.

Lots of replies - all about noise, not many answering the question. Malcolm wants some info on mileage.

The answer is that you can still achieve good mileage (say 80 000km) out of a set of MT tyres, depending on how you drive. You will also improve the mileage if you drive them more offroad.

So - this means that if you can be bothered running 2 sets of wheels, you will get the best of both worlds and both your MT's and your Grabbers will last longer. You also need to consider that just leaving one set of wheels off the vehicle indefinitely will cause those tyres to harden up - then they are compromised.

But - if you just run MT's - drive in a manner that will reduce them from heating up too much (play with tyre pressures and don't drive too fast) and avoid cornering at speed, accelerating / braking rapidly, and your MT's will last nearly as long as a set of AT's.

Go for it I say - I'm running Mickey Thompson MTZ's on mine and I expect 80,000km from them. The BFG's are great tyres too.
