if you go down the route of using the existing 10as unit you could send it to Technozn Electronics, who would pair your key fobs to it, check for faults and repair if needed and also enable the smart function to turn the interior lights back to working with the door switch.
I had my 10as unit repaired for a very reasonable £30.00 including postage back to me in 3 day turnaround.

No I know, but you could buy some, they are readily availible, and it could work out cheaper than buying an aftermarket alarm and installing that.

Cheers gav.
It has obviously had the immobiliser bypassed by previous owner and I wouldn't have a clue about resetting it.

Yanto, I have exactly the same model & year Defender as you and my interior light doesn't switch on with doors open either. I don't have a fob, simply just a key. Will be subscribing to this thread as I didn't think these Defenders had an alarm/fob ready.

A 2003 pick-up like this:

Can have a fob and alarm switched on. That is programmable in the AS10.
Mine had a fob and mine is switched off as the fob wasn't working always and mostly when I wasn't at home. Roel

OK, please talk me through it. A couple more questions:

Activate the AS10 through the OBD port & pair a key fob. Is this the same as a discovery key?

Obviously we don't have central locking on our vehicles. Is the fob separate or as part of the key? And is the alarm a siren, or horn? How is it activated?

Cheers,
Lund

I'm no expert, only learnt through my own experience, but the key fobs are separate to the main key and not all in one like the discovery.
Yes you need to connect to the obd port to the 10as unit to pair the fobs and change any setting in the alarm ecu.
Mine was a county station wagon and has a separate alarm siren in the n/s front wing. When my alarm is activated it sounds both the siren and the horn, this can be changed from constant to pulsed in the alarm menu.
Also you can change interior light settings to enable it to work with the door switches
