It might be a stone trapped between the backplate and disc. Try reversing and dabbing the brake pedal. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Know what you mean. I stopped in Duns today and pressure washed the car playing it on to the discs etc (bad I know, don't usually) no good. Will try the reverse trick later.
It is the rear discs btw. |

Yep, most likely a stone trapped.
Reverse, brake, move forward brake etc. Generally be erratic and it should go. Ideally you want a quiet lane to do it in and it should go. I've had it twice with genuine pads but strangely not at all since the EBC's. Last edited by custom90 on 10th Mar 2016 7:02pm. Edited 1 time in total |

or springs between pads has worn/broken pads is not being pushed back far enough, noise goes when braking as force is applied to pad. Cheers

Hi
I had/have this problem too. A whistling sound (like using a cutting blade on a metal lathe) while moving - as soon as I put my foot lightly on the brakes the note changes and if I brake properly the sound goes away. The sound only occurred when the car had been moving for around 20 minutes and got worse the longer I drove. Interestingly, long periods on open roads (not using brakes) would have the sound gradually reduce to nothing but as soon as I came into a town and touched the brakes the noise was back - and embarassingly loud. I took it into an independent and he scuffed up the brake pads and noticed they had been put on backwards by the main dealer so he swapped sides of the axle. For a few days there was no sound. After a 1 hr trip towing a heavy boat I noticed the the sound coming back slightly but I'm convinced it is now coming from the other side of the vehicle. I haven't had time to take it back to the independent. I think this is a problem with the pads and suspect changing them for new ones would solve it. Cheers |
