I'm after some help please.
I have two separate 'problems' that I'd like to solve. The first is I have a wall mounted flat screen TV with two HDMI cables that run the length of the lounge (approx 25' feet) and connect to the Sky plus box and the DVD player - evidently the cables are 'ugly' and the missus wants rid. Which kit do I need to wirelessly connect these items. Secondly I have an aerial cable that goes from the same Sky plus box, out through the external wall, along the house and into the kitchen to another TV and uses one of those infrared things so you can watch Sky and change channels. This has packed up after working fine for 4 years, can I make that set up wireless too ? Advice would be much appreciated  |

You are going to be bitterly disapointed by low end (cheap!) wireless HDMI video senders. They are unreliable at best. HDMI is a minefield of a standard!
Gefen make a high end unit. There stuff is high quality but I don't have any experience of their wifi senders. Could you get away with a neat run of single cat6? Perhaps chased into the wall? HDMI over cat6 is reliable (again at the better end of the market). I use Kramer Electronics kit day in day out in the corporate events world and have never had any issues with it. I haven't ever used their wireless stuff personally but have had numerous demo's of it and should a job come up that requires a wireless link I wouldn't hesitate to purchase their kit.

As Barney has said avoid cheap HDMI wireless kit, it is a real nightmare of a standard to work with when using cable let alone wireless. HTH Simon |

Daft answer, maybe, but if the mountain won't come to Muhammad, Muhammad must go to the mountain. Would it therefore not be simpler to move you Sky plus box and the DVD player nearer to the screen.
If you cannot bring the Sky and Dvd box nearer could you not go under the floor providng of course you have a wooden or lifetable floor. Wireless HD can be pretty unreliable, assuming you can get it to work at all, and be prepared for loss of definition and picture quality particularly in HD as Wireless devices add compression and are pretty rubbish digitally speaking. The rule of thumb here is this so you need to tell your wife, ‘there’s only one way to get unmolested HDMI content to a screen and that’s with cables’. Wireless sounds ideal and is probably the way all things will go in the future...
But, and it is a big but for me, having had a wireless TV set up for many years (possibly things have improved!) we recently bought a new TV and opted for totally wired... 
We use a lot of mobile devices, wireless, through the router and found, wherever we placed the TV and its box, or how we configured it, we always had problems with other wireless devices interfering with the TV picture signal and disrupting the picture no end, particularly our iPhones for some inexplicable reason, but iPads too although not always so bad... 
It has been a blessed relief to go back to wired and have absolutely no interference from any of our wireless devices, which we can now use with impunity... 
I am not saying any of the systems mentioned above would, necessarily, cause the same issues and maybe you do not have the same propensity, or need, as we do for using mobile devices, but it is something to be aware of Matt...

May be a silly quesstion, but obviously there's also a mains cable running to the flat screen, and if you would use the GevenTV setup, another mains cable is added. How would you get rid of that - haven't seen the wirless power sets yet

I have had the same problems with iPhones, sometimes breaking up the picture into jumbled up pixels then our satellite TV guy installed 4G in-line filters and that sorted the problems . If you are going to do that, buy a cheap wall chaser or hire one, you will have the job done in no time at all and with very little risk of cracking the plaster or making a simple job into a huge one. Wireless is a great idea for some medium, but there will always be a compromise.
Especially these days with so much airborne transmission We use video transmission in our business, and if possible will always utilise "copper", wireless is always second choice. If you are going to bury cables then put a few runs of CAT6 in whilst you're at it. That way when you want that new fan dangled AV setup with the latest summin' you've got a bit of future proofing! |
