After she has been off the road for around five weeks without an mot I git my act together and prepared her for it which followed nicely by a pass with no advisories............marvellous.
But. For the past 300 miles she's been running brilliantly and then I get a loud bang and a shudder through the vehicle. I currently have no front prop so that discards those uj's. I'm getting to the end of my tether with this issue. |

With no front propshaft he must be.

I would section each part of the transmission to try and narrow it down.. sounds like you already have the front prop off, have you had the 'locking' since removing it?
if so then refit the front prop and remove the rear prop and half shafts.. so the rear wheels are free wheeling, at the same time I would remove the hand brake drum to to get that out of the picture.. if you still get the 'locking/clunking' then your gearbox is shagged.. eliminate things one by one, Ive had a half shaft snap before in such a way that it would still drive, but under load it made a horrific bang... It really shouldnt be that hard to diagnose, there's only really a few things that it can be, but most likely the gearbox if you've already replaced the T/box.. Hope you get it sorted asap! My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey  2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |

If it was me I would pull half shafts and check.
Then pull the hubs and inspect all the bearings. Over a 4 week period, My old disco started making a strange rumbling noise,came and went while driving, I was 99% sure it was rear diff. I span all the wheels, no play, no roughness in the bearings? I brought a second hand diff and fitted, even though I could find nothing wrong with the old one,still the same? So, I took all the hubs off only to find the o/s inner wheel bearing was virtually non existent! It had got so hot the hub and bearing were blue. Still find it odd to this day that the wheel spun with no noise or play?? But obviously when hot would partially seize it every now and then, which was the noise! Ended up replacing stub axle too as it had been badly scored. Remove the inner wheel bearings, and have a good feel/look at them. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Just to add to the pain that it's giving me at the moment she span a drive flange this evening and lost that last part of the drive.
So down a side road in town the front prop was our back on and we got it moved. It's now driving again but with a high pitched groan coming from the front. It only happens between 0-30mph and then it goes silent. It also goes quiet when I turn right. It only happens when I'm under load and not freewheeling. This is the noise that it is making. Cheers |

I think you're just going to have to start pulling hubs and diffs apart and go hunting I'm afraid.

I have just been crawling around under her for half an hour. I saw that the front output shaft of the transfer box was weeping oil, on further inspection its because there is some play in the bearing. Im just wondering if that would cause that noise? but it seems unlikely that it would be affected by the steering.
