Ouch!
I'd say so. I'm surprised that the MOT Inspector didn't comment on that |

Plenty of information on the forum,
There's a quick fix that takes 30 minutes that involves the cutting of a new seal to fit, or a proper fix detasiling how exactly to do it. From the look of your clip it looks like your axle tube seals may have gone allowing oil into the grease perhaps? http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic13286....ivel+seals If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Swivel bearings arnt too bad to do but you will need to have all of the gear ready to remove the swivel ball (14/15mm 12point ring spanner), drift/chisel for removing and replace the bearing races from the swivel ball, new swivel seal which can be fitted complete with the swivel ball off. You will also need a set of shims and a spring balance to set the swivel preload.
Be aware when reassembling that some figures for the bolt torque on the lover swivel pin retaining bolts which are wrong and ridiculously high for am 8.8 M8 bolt and will result in shearing them off. This is my next job. I think my top bearing has collapsed. Steering wheel wobble at 60 and I can rock the wheel vertically. Any opinions on whether it's going to be just bearing or if my swivel housing is likely to be mullered?

Housing usually survives, though the separate pins can get mullered.
Tank - just to check, you hadn't undone the top two bolts holding the upper swivel pin in had you? If you undo those two bolts (for example to remove the brake pipe bracket) without supporting the housing then it will drop under its own weight, this will allow a big leak and also 9 times out of 10 damage the seal. A bottle jack under the bottom swivel pin prevents this. The reason I ask is that you have a considerable leak, actually dripping, and it appears you have removed the hub/calipers so might have made this mistake. |

In that case you might get away with replacing the top pin and putting it back together and the leak will stop, depends if the seal has been damaged. If it has then it's replacement time I'm afraid, as others have noted above.
One modification that's worth doing is to cut the hole in the brake pipe bracket into a notch/slot, that way the pipe can be removed by just undoing the clamp nut and lifting it off, solving this problem. It also means that to change a wheel bearing or hub seal for example you don't have to undo the brake pipe unions themselves and all the extra bleeding work etc. that entails. The caliper can be removed, still plumbed up, and hung up on the radius arm out of the way. |
