"Oil Service" light 3k after last service....
So I'm booked on a ferry to Santander on Friday, tomorrow we're driving down to london, and at 7.30pm tonight the car has decided to show "oil service" when I start it up.

FFS.

So... I don't know how long I'm away for, we've not booked to come back yet. We're likely doing 3,000 miles through Europe on the route below. I am going to London tomorrow, then ferry booked for Saturday.

No idea what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Was it reset after the last oil service?

Yep, only started showing today. 2,500 miles is taking the Censored .

Try this http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic34134....il+service to reset it yourself. Dave

The oil service symbol is there for a reason. Don't reset it without changing the oil. It comes on after the ecu decides the oil is too diluted with diesel to be effective. Perhaps try and book into a Spanish dealership for an oil change when you get there? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I'm pretty certain the warning light is based on a calculation (driving style, DPF regen count) rather than a direct measurement of oil dilution. The calculation aims to approximate a maximum 7% dilution IIRC.

I suspect the OP hasn't actually had the oil service light reset by the mechanic/dealer; i.e. the ECU doesn't know the oil has been changed. Dave

You're going to France and Spain, Not Siberia via Azerbaijan! Just find a garage or french LR dealer and get an oil change done!

On a separate note, this is why I generally buy 2 oil changes worth at a time and keep a fresh batch in the garage!

Alternatively, whereabouts/what for in london? AJS4x4 are in reigate, on the southern edge of the M25 and I'm sure would be able to fit an oil change.

We're staying overnight everywhere - so 1 day in San Seb, 1 day next place etc... only place where we're staying 2 nights is Barcelona... so that might be the only chance to do it tbh as everywhere else I can't spend all day at the garage with a 2 year old and the girlfriend.

The 7% dilution figure equates to roughly 500ml.

The quantity of oil required to raise the level from the MIN mark to the MAX mark is approximately 2 litres (3.5 pints).

If you know where your dipstick oil level was sitting after the service then it should be easy to see if that has risen by the 7% amount. If it has then the calculation is correct but if it's not moved you could roll the dice and choose to ignore the message.

I'll contact a Barcelona dealer and ask them to change the oil. I'm there 3 days so hopefully a quick thing and they don't try to rip me off.

So I blasted down to london, the portsmouth, and now in san sebastian.

The light's not coming on again now - any ideas? Was it just the dpf needing a good run?

Just read this:

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic25462-15.html

"This morning the OIL SERVICE LIGHT was not on when I started the engine but I had booked into Roger Youngs for them to reset it anyway so off I went.

On arrival I explained the stop start running and low mileage from the last oil change and the fact that this morning it was no longer showing the OIL SERVICE WARNING.

The service manager asked if i had done any longish runs prior to the OIL SERVICE WARNING light no illuminating.

Funny old thing (I did a quick blast to Exeter last night probably about 25 miles of dual carriageway).

Anyway the service manager told me that the OIL SERVICE WARNING LIGHT will illuminate prior to the ecu requesting a DPF Regen.. if the regen is not completed i.e. stop start running it will stay illuminated until it has completed the regen.

They did a fault read and it had registered the OIL SERVICE WARNING, so they duly reset it for me, washed the vehicle and it cost me sweet FA.

Top service from Roger Youngs yet again."

So that's what it'll have been! All's good it seems!

Odd that both the owners manual and workshop manual make no reference to this functionality - why would dpf issues not trigger the dpf alarm lights?

Not saying it's not true but it does have the ring of the sort of Censored dealers have been known to make up on the hoof to try and fob off owners.
