Mixed views on frequent oil changes
A discussion on the benefits or lack of them on more frequent oil changes than recommended by the manufacturer.

You can get a diff lock drain plug fitting if you are worried, but 5000 miles or annually for me Thumbs Up

Maybe if you have green blood it might not be the best for the environment .. But then if you look at the dust to dust report on the life of a hybrid you'll not worry

5k is a bit excessive in a modern engine, IMHO, but you won't do any harm by changing the oil to frequently
Older 200/300TDi should be done at 5k

I do the oil in my own car (Disco 3) every 10k, but then I do 30k a year
The wife's car and my Freelander get done every 12 months, as neither do high miles, and when my Freelander does get taken out, it's usually driven pretty hard (once warm) Mr. Green

Always done my vehicles at 5k, I also fit the quick drain plugs to help. It may waste money, but can't see any other downsides.

I bought a turbo diesel 90 in 1990. The stated service interval for oil and filters was every 3,000 miles. I kept to this in the six years that I owned the vehicle and never had any issues engine wise.
The service interval could be extended to 5,000 miles for an oil or filter change if you used Super High Performance specification oil.
This was mineral oil. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu
2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai

When I rebuilt the head on my 200Tdi I asked turners what intervals should I be doing and they said after the first 3000 then go back to every 4000.

I service a 200 tdi 110 CSW for a mate who is a vet and then get it MOT'd for him. He has zero mechanical sympathy at all so this often entails quite a bit of extra work over and above a normal fluids and filters service. At the last MOT the girl doing the texting commented on how many miles my mate does between tests. I hadn't realised but he had done 24K since his last oild change and 22K the year before. The engine in his truck is one of the sweetest TDis I know.

Turners are correct . I have done an oil change and fuel filter change on every vehicle I've owned over the past 25yrs .
Every 4000 religiously .

I did the 200 tdi every 3,000 miles too. It was the family car for 16 years. I was using semi synthetic for the last couple of years we used it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Can't see the point of going above and beyond what the manual asks for.

Book for my 200Tdi says every 6,000 miles for the conditions I use it in so that's what I do.

I bought a Nissan Cabstar off an engine remanufacturer (he had bought it as a non runner cheap and turned it around to sell on). His workshop was full of Transits and Nissans (Navaras and Pathfinders), all modern. He said to me that the overriding reason that he sees engines that have failed is that people don't change the oil often enough - modern service intervals (particularly on commercial vehicles) are set unhealthily long by manufacturers to remain competitive (it can make up quite a significant cost of ownership on a van). He recommended no more than 5000 miles between services for modern diesel engines (which actually run pretty dirty internally due to EGR valves etc - older more basic engines don't build up as much carbon inside apparently).
