2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Java Black (black Hood)
Problems with the heating
I'm having problems with my 2002 110 TD5. The heating inside the car has a life of it's own. Sometimes it works fine and then suddenly only cold air is coming out. The needle in temperature gauge is a little to the left of 12 o clock. If I turn on the Webasto while driving when cold air is coming out I can mostly get hot air again. When the Webasto has run for 5 min I turn if off and hot air will continue, sometimes cold air will return. It is different when the hot air stops, it can be in city traffic or on the highway.

The Webasto runs every morning and the car delightfully warm when I get in.

I've noticed that there is some overpressure in the system next morning (before the Webasto) if I remove the cap from the expansion tank. I can also see traces of coolant on the expansion tank.

I'm loosing about ½ litre of coolant every other week. I can't really see any leaks in the system.

Any ideas of where to look?

heater matrix itself tiltall small leak down buckhead under heater box, engine cylinder head right hand side, 1. 1/4``round thread plug in head underneath metal gasket for exhaust manifold tiltall small leak down right side engine block collects at the bottom

or your head gasket

Check your water level in the Radiator header tank - we had a couple of TD5's and the water seeped away some times and the temp dropped on the heater. Check the operation of the thermostat.

Cracked heads are common too... check your oil level, see if any coolant has been making it to the sump. Have you had any excessive white exhaust (burnt coolant)? May want to have your oil tested for coolant.

When you see that much coolant disappearing, you have to know it's going somewhere. It's leaking out... or leaking in.

sounds like pressurisation causing possible air locks hence sporadic cold heater had a rangerover do this ,turned out to be a cracked head Sad good luck with it hope I'm wrong one life, sell it

My td5 used to behave strange and do similar to yours. It was the expansion bottle cap. The relief valve was broken and vented constantly allowed the fluid to dribble out of the cap.
I had the car pressure tested and found a leak in the heater matrix but nothing else. Talking to the local indy they told me the caps sometimes fail. Mine has been fine since and covered several thousand miles 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
