Mine's fine. I never have to use the handbrake on hill starts.

I had to do a hill start the other week on a steep hill with a trailer on the back. Despite getting the biting point and what I thought was enough revs I kept stalling. In the end I had losts of revs and wheel spinning just to get going!

Now I need a steep hill again to try the anti-stall feature and see how I go. 1999 Defender TD5 110

With a Td5 it is quite an art, the trick is to let the clutch pedal out completely before throttle. When I had a test drive in a Puma it took me a couple of attempts before I got it right and then when I got back into my own Td5 to drive home I stalled it getting out of the Experience carpark, that's embarrassing Whistle

so is it the same as putting in first gear, feet off all peddles and let it trundle along?

Yes don't touch the clutch pedal or the throttle. The td5 is really capable in low first as long as it is a little smooth if it falls in a ditch with both front wheels it still probably stalles but if it is a steep hill you will be amazed how much it does. Roel
