2A chassis number is 2002, 3A 2003 and so on.
As far as i know all facelift defenders (dash centre console) have the 15p engine. Easy to identify by the EGR cooler on the front of the cylinder head though. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread 84' 90 3.9 V8 Caged Pickup Build Thread - Now For Sale |

This is what I read up on it. Cylinder heads crack around the injectors on vehicles with engine number prefix 10P. A symptom is diesel in the sump; the oil level rises and the dipstick smells dieselly. The engine might run-on after switching off, which can be very serious. Engines with a number starting 15P don’t have problems, and vehicles with ’52 registrations or newer will be ok. Check the paperwork to see if early vehicles have been rectified. The heads were originally positioned with plastic dowels, which meant the casting could move fractionally. This could disturb the head gasket seal, resulting in coolant loss and overheating. Steel dowels were used from VIN 2A622424. Check the service paperwork to see if earlier engines have been fixed. A bolt retaining the oil pump sprocket can come loose – sprocket comes off, no oil, goodbye engine. Bolts should have been fitted with a thread-locking compound but often weren’t. If the job hasn’t been done, do it as preventive maintenance. However how true this is, is a matter of conjecture as I have heard of later engines blowing head gaskets!!! Thanks for the replies. Tony. |

I have seen several of the plastic dowels that have come off the 10P engines and they have a serious bend. However when the head is replaced, the recommendation is to not use the steel dowel, any ideas why?

Mine was registered on 20th Sept 01, is chassis 623xxx and has the 15p engine. So I'd assume any '51' plate or newer.. 2002MY Defender 90 H/T |

2002 model year onwards are 15P engines. Also new dash, new one piece rear door.
1999, 2000, 2001 model years are 10P Remember is it MODEL year, not build year. The chassis number tells you the model year, not the 6 numbers at the end but the character at the start of the last 8 characters. e.g. SALLD.......1A523411 would be 2001 model year (10P) SALLD.......2A625451 would be 2002 model year (15P) SALLD.......3A744788 would be 2003 model year (15P) (I have made up all the last 6 numbers BTW) 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Had the 10p in my td5 disco 2. Brought it on 120k miles, sold it on 190k miles. No engine issues whatsoever.

Just seen your location, if you want a second opinion on a vehicle, I'll happily give it a look over with you. It wasn't me! |

Mines a 51 plate td5 with the centre dash from new but is the 10p engine. It was a strange old spec of left overs though so your probably right in general |
