TD5 ECU
Hi all,

First off, I don't currently have a problem with the ECU.

I'm still investigating various mods the previous owners have made.

One of the mods done was a stage 1 ECU Remap from JE Engineering.

On the ECU, I have noted a couple of things.

1) one of the black wires has been exposed (appears deliberate);
2) some wires appear to terminate in a blue block, which does not appear to be connected.

I'm wondering if JE or the owner carried out a mod to expose one of the wires to allow a drain point for engine oil, ie stops it wicking all the way to the ECU?

Any thoughts?

Looks quite normal to me, the "exposed" wire will be the earth or "drain" conductor of a shielded or screened wire and the blue connector is actually a "header" where a number of wires are simply joined together.

The famous oil will come through the 5 yellow wires on the left side of the red plug at the top picture so nothing to do with the black on.

Nothing looks strange to me how your wires are. Roel

Thanks all for the comments so far.

To check for oil, should I disconnect the battery first prior to unplugging the multiplug?

Cheers

You mean the plug(s) on the ECU? As Roel says, it's probably best to disconnect the battery, but I have unplugged them several times without disconnecting the battery. Never had an issue. Maybe I was lucky, I don't know. Just be sure your ignition is turned off all the way. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Having picked up my TD5 (2002) last week I'm keen to get the wiring loom and gasket replaced to reduce the chance of oil in to the ECU -mine looks a lot like the above. Having read up on it, this looks achievable even for me although I'm less clear about were to stick sealant to prevent oil appearing in the future which would be nice to do.

Were I to take it to an independent to get them to do it, can anyone give me a ball park figure for what it will cost me? I can't imagine it will take them that long so c. £40 in parts and then an hours labour at whatever that will be? I couldn't find any prices online!

Cheers,

@ tasr12 Did you go ahead and change it ?

It might have been done already, you dont say if you've taken the plug off the ECU to see if theres actually oil there, could well be wasting your money on a new loom and gasket.

I did mine ages ago as it was infact pretty bad in the ECU plug, The job itself is easy really, just clean round so you dont get crap in the Head, the seals not supposed to have additional sealer on it but many do put it round the half moon chunk of the cover seal, and dont over tighten the cover bolts its a very low torque setting.

Stealers near me charge about 120 an hour, you're prolly looking at half that for an indy. 3 Landrovers

I did as there was some oil at the plug end. Unfortunately work conspired against me so an Independent did it, albeit it wasn't the workshop of the Indy as it was on leave so they used the normal garage next door.

I was hoping to establish a good link with the Indy given it's only 8 miles away but I'm left with a slight bitter taste. They were helpful on the phone and got it in relatively quickly, albeit not their mechanics, but then after telling me they had a specific loom they recommend as better than the rest at £40 + Vat it turned out to be Bearmach which I could source anywhere else for 26+Vat - at which point they said I could go elsewhere if I wanted.

Time was tight and as much as I wanted to make a point I wanted it doing before the bank holiday. He did plug in to their Autocom after the mechs had done the job to run a check which 'they normally charge for'?

Just to add insult when I got back and had a check over the mechs had not re-attached the top breather hose! It was sat on top of the MAF. I let the Indy know, they went next door to inform the garage who were adamant they did re-attach.....but I'd like to know how it made it out from under the acoustic cover to sit on top of the MAF in the 8 mile drive home!!!!!

So in sum, loom and gasket changed, but not as easily as I had hoped. (hindsight I wish I had just done it myself now) After a 100 mile run yesterday there was no more oil at the plug end so I think whatever was there has worked through pretty quickly. No names included deliberately as I'm not in to that unless really warranted, and it wasn't their workshop, but I'm not sure I will be going back as the price bit Censored me off.......pity. It will be back to AL Services in Poole in the future I think.

In the interest of thoroughness I'm just considering taking the lid off the ECU to have a look inside but I don't know if that will cause more problems than solve! 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver

Have a look at this, it's for a D2 but the principle is the same and it covers opening the ECU Thumbs Up

Many Thanks - very useful!

It's now raining hard so it's safe for the time being. I think I will leave it for the time being as the vehicle isn't showing any ill effects and keep it up the sleeve, unless curiosity gets the better of me.

Cheers.
