I think it's important to look at the direction of travel (pardon the pun) of tyres.

MT patterns are being forced to be less aggressive due to noise constraints.

AT patterns are becoming more aggressive in the sipes to get traction in the mud.

Very soon I think you will see the disappearance of MT pattern in favour of hybrid patterns.

BFG Trac Edge was their best selling tyre. The reason was that it was designed for 5ton pick up. Used on a LR it lasted for ever. Thus repeat sales, despite it being extremely popular, were low.

Doubt BFG will repeat that mistake. BUT, as been said. It will be a solid gold tyre and you won't be unhappy. Oh, and as for 1000 mile on extreme gravel, wasn't that at speed on the Baja? New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

I can also attest to the fact that the current BFG AT is not that good on gravel.

Many ZA drivers have ditched BFG because they chip very badly on our gravel roads, especially in the Western Cape.

Here are some photos of my BFGs after driving on a gravel road for around 130km in 2013, tyres had not even done 40,000km then. It's in the shop, so I can show you how much worse it looks now after another 20,000km, mosty tar.
