Oil
Hi got a 1954 86'' with it original 2 litre with the Siamese bore, what oil are people using ? A straight monograde or a 20w50 multi? Also does anybody know a supply or oil filters? As it has the bypass canister type.
Regards

I use the comma 20/40 in my Siamese bore 2ltr
Same in the 1600 too.

If you contact the S1 club shop they do spin on filter conversion kits which does make life easier!
I've run one on the 80" with good results. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

+1 for the spin on filter conversion. Better than having to pay £150 for a filter each time Thumbs Up

my old 51 "80" inch 1600 , I used to have to run the engine on ep90 axle oil as the engine was so knackered , it wouldn't have any oil pressure when warm on engine oil

used it like this for couple of years ( never used it much anyway ) , until I collected the bits to built a 2l out of a overbored 1600 so it looked standard but was 2l instead of the 1.6l

only trouble was if it was really cold weather you had to let it warm up on tickover as the oil was so thick cold if you revved it the oil pressure was about 200psi but warm it dropped to standard pressure

I made a conversion to use Austin mini oil filters

When I bought my 86" (in the mid '80s IIRC) the previous owner had screwed the oil pressure relief valve all the way down in an attempt to 'improve' the oil pressure. The first time I started it on a cold morning there was a load bang followed by a gurgling sound as the filter blew off (the centre bolt snapped) and all the oil was pumped out onto the ground. You can still see the stain to this day! Fortunately I shut the engine off immediately I heard the bang so no particular damage was done.

Rolling with laughter ^^^ Briliant!

I'm putting a test gauge on mine tonight to see how's she's doing?

The manual says 20psi on tick over, so we shall see.... Whistle 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I have no idea what pressure mine produced just before the centrebolt gave up, but I image that it must have been well into three figures! I have never repeated the test.

I also had no idea that S1 full flow filters now cost £150. Shocked

I replaced the 2L in the 86" with a 2286cc motor not long after the exploding filter incident. I still have the original engine though, so in theory it could revert to original.
