Defender 110 rear knocking
Good afternoon,

I have recently joined this forum upon purchase of a 2010 Defender 110 crew cab county spec. I love the vehicle, and have grown very fond of it in my short time of ownership and has made a wonderful addition to my landrover driveway. However, I am experiencing some knocking from the rear over bumps in the road etc which is proving frustrating, and has caused me some concern.

I have jacked the rear wheels up individually, there is absolutely no play in the wheel bearings on either side. I have also done my best to check for play in the suspension bushes, of which I can deem to be in good form with no movement either. When the vehicle is on the ground, if one grabs the rear tub and shakes the vehicle side to side, there is a distinctive 'knocking' coming from somewhere - felt though the hands more than audible. Is this just the drive train in the rear taking up upon the slight inevitable forward/backward movement? Or am I not checking something I ought?

If anyone would be kind enough to share their thoughts upon my predicament, I would be most grateful.

Could be anti roll bar links/bushes . my puma has 4k and the rear axle ball joint is knocking Rolling Eyes

Had a similar issue on my TD5. The rear shock bushes had gone, only been fitted a year Shocked

Not expensive and easy to change.

As Grizz said, could also be the roll bar bushes but I think I would start with the shock bushes and go from there.

I had a similar problem I think and it was where the body mounts to the chassis. These bolts were loose. Bolts tightened, noise gone.

I had a bump-related knocking and it was the rear lower shock bushes. As Bob says, not expensive and easy to change so might be worth starting there. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Put your hand on the shock top mount collars. (Top mount bolt area)
See if you can feel anything there when you rock the body too.
Check both sides to see if there is a difference.
If there is you've pin pointed your problem shocker.
If neither of those then it could be the anti roll bar bushes as mentioned above.
If you do identify a shock causing issues report back and we can go from there. Thumbs Up

Dear all,

Thankyou for your kind replies. Upon further investigation on advice received here, there is not movement in either the upper or lower shock mount bushes. The anti roll bar bushes are also solid, I have been on my back under the vehicle shaking it violently and there is no movement in any of the bushes. However, I shook the vehicle whilst holding the rear of the a frame, and can discern some movement in the ball joint. Indeed, when grabbing the a frame, I can make the knocking noise by rocking the a frame up and down. The other ends of the a frame seem to be solid. Would I be correct to assume this is the cause and would best describe my symptoms?

With regard to replacement, can one purchase a unit with the bearing in? I presume a press would be involved, and whilst I have an array of workshop items to keep my farming machinery operational, I do not own a press!

Having just replaced mine I'd recommend replacing the two bolts that hold the ball joint to the arms too. And +1 for the regreaseable gwyn Lewis one above Thumbs Up Ray

Thankyou all for your replies. I have ordered one of the suggested replacements, with new bolts and bushes for the front of the a frame also. Ignorant question, can one fit these parts with the vehicle on the ground? I presume so however would hate to get it wrong?

I am pleased to announce that the replacement of the ball joint on the a frame has proved the fix my defender needed. It drives wonderfully now. Thankyou all for your kind suggestions and help.
