To close this thread, I thought the following notes might be of some interest.

1) My thanks to the team at Alive, for stunningly good service! I am not sure who I spoke to (Gary, Alex, or someone else) but they were extremely helpful, and I ordered a front pipe mid-morning on Wednesday, it arrived mid-morning on Thursday, and was fitted by mid-morning on Friday. Many thanks, guys, if you read this! Thumbs Up

2) Replacing the broken cat pipe with a de-cat pipe has made two significant differences. Firstly the noise is quite different. There wasn't much 'leaky exhaust' noise from the engine with the cracked pipe, but there were general 'bag-of-nails' sounds and 'turbo-on-its-last-legs' rattles and whistles which were disturbing. They have now gone, and the engine generally is sweeter-sounding and seems smoother than ever. Secondly the performance from 2500 rpm upwards is transformed - whereas before the engine sounded as though it was objecting to revving to 3000 rpm, and I seldom did so, now it is smooth, sweet, and quiet to 3500 rpm (and possibly higher, but that's not how I drive it). The power is noticeably improved at these engine speeds too, with more power and a smoother delivery.

Thumbs Up I have my eye on the Alive exhusts too.

Gary got me out of a hole quick with some EGR problems I had last year too.

Would you of got any of the benefits of the de-cat pipe by just replacing a broken cat pipe with a new one though?

I can well imagine that the noise improvement would be the same, but it is hard to see how the performance increase would have resulted from a cat fitment. it is possible (back pressure and all that) but I doubt it. The performance difference is not earth-shattering but is noticeable.

Ultimately we won't find out until I take the decat off to refit a cat pipe when I find one at a sensible price.

On my mates stock puma, decat and air intake mod definatly made a difference not a placebo one for sure!

TD5s and 2.4s yes cats are easily removed with no complications. 2.2s obviously don't have cats and apart from certain export models of 2.2s that do not have DPFs fitted I've yet to hear of a 2.2 Defender DPF removal in the uk. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

From the downpipe rearwards the exhausts are exactly the same be it 2.2 or 2.4. The CAT on a 2.4 is not connected to the ECU and as such can be removed without any further implications or affects to the running. The DPF is a completely different kettle of fish.....a DPF is not the same as a Catalytic Convertor.

From the Alive website as an example......

This ALIVE Exhaust System does not come with a Decat Downpipe Section, as the Puma 2.2 TD4 Model is fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter, which can not be removed.

All or most dpf vehicles have a cat and dpf , most new ones are in one unit , some older vehicles in two separate units

saying that k9f , i knew what you ment Thumbs Up

There are some companys programming out the dpf in the ecu program /map , then you knock the centre out of dpf , not heard of any land rovers being done ( YET !! )

There's a van that conveniently parks outside several dealerships that are very close together near me with advertising on the side stating that they can offer 'a DPF removal service' I was wondering after last year February's MOT legislation regarding Cats and DPFs how their business was affected? Still appear to be parked there most days.

My point regarding DPF/Cat removal on a 2.2 was twofold. Those that do so on a TD5/2.4 find it an easy uncomplicated process. Not so on a 2.2 that's why nobody has done it as far as I know. There was discussion on the forum about the availability of south African ECUs fitting it and just binning the DPF off a 2.2 as a viable option sometime ago. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

But a 2.2 (UK spec) has both a cat & a dpf.
