Guys, this is a fascinating thread, thank you all. A simple question, what is the best oil for a 2.2 (assuming we change it every six months) and what difference does the filter make if any. Sorry to get it to a simple level, but some owners are not engine geniuses. Thumbs Up

I'm no mechanic but from what i can work out, It seems these Diesel Particulate Filters are a problem, they supposedly reduce the emissions by recycling the particles, problem is they get blocked and that's when the problems start. Short journeys aren't apparently good for them. My local post office went and bought a load of vans with DPF's problem is most posties journeys involve short journeys of stopping and starting and the engine management system lights were coming on and they resulted in problems with the engines.

You can get products like Wynn's Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner which supposedly helps clean the filter. But long runs every so often with higher revs are meant to help the recycling.

Whats the best oil ?

everyone will say the oil they use is best , because luckily there engine hasnt gone bang , and thats it LUCK

99.9% of engine go wrong because something breaks not worn out

makes of oil , if its to spec for that engine whatever engine it is , Its to spec , you will never know if one is really better than the other

if there was proven bad oil they what have hundreds of lawsuits against them

Prices of oil , i dont believe expensive is better as said if its to spec thats it , saying makes i mean branded make castrol,mobil,granville,comma,etc etc

regular changes are needed yes , but dont believe in every 5 mins

As Munch says I'd go with whatever meets the required spec, probably go for a reasonably priced oil and drop it often. I think very expensive oils are a waste on a moderately powerful car which contaminates its oil badly.

Cheaper and more frequent changes are what I'd lean towards.

The other halfs dpf equipped Focus gets its oil dropped about every 8K, which I think is reasonable but maybe stretching it a bit if wanting ultimate engine life.

Personally on my 2.4 Tdci I try to change mine at least once every 9-10 months or before 6 K miles.

If I had a 2.2 that I planned keeping for a long time I think I'd be dropping it every 4.5 to 6 K miles depending on use.

For the 2.2 with dpf use C1 5w30 as per the spec
I am currently using Millers XF C1 5w30 from opie oils as it is readily available and reasonably priced, buy 2 x 5ltr and you got plenty for topping up if required

I would use genuine oil filter, I have used many pattern part filters over the years especially on my old Hilux, Fram leaked on rim of the canister, 2 other filters I had both leaked from Crosland, so I put an original on - no issues and have never had issue with original
Plus the non return valve retained the oil better than the aftermarket ones
(Yes there is no non return valve in the defender oil filter - just making a point Thumbs Up )

I agree with avoiding poor quality oil filters, I use either genuine or a quality OEM spec aftermarket, I have bought the Mahle several times from Opie oils and they appear to be very good. On a par with the LR part.

I think they are about 11 quid for two as opposed to 13 ish quid each from LR

I am fairly sure my main dealer uses Castrol Edge, I occasionally find a top up bottle on the passenger seat. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

This is a very good read.

I`ve just spent a few days on works courses, at Fiat.
We have been using variable displacement oil pump`s on car engines for a while, How it`s coming to the new eco jet commercial engine range. We were given the variable displacement pumps to play with / inspect. Try this link it might work. ( I`am no computer bod ! )

Anyway you can see how the vanes move within the pump, against the position of the outer liner, relative to it`s position against the big spring to increase / decrease oil pressure as required.

Once you have looked into the workings of the system you can see just how important oil changes are.
The pumps pressure out put is measured by two sensors, one is set to inform the engine ecu of pump load between 2 to 2.5 bar. And the other one is the basic 0.5 bar. LOW oil pressure warning. A solenoid valve is fitted into the pump chamber to drain off excess oil to achieve the pressure requested by the engine ecu. The pump is set up, so if the electronics go wrong it reverts to a standard oil pump.

Apperently this new oil pump gives a 3 % reduction in green house gasses emitted from the vehicles exhaust, and makes the engine that little bit more efficient.

Or so they say. Anyway just look after your engine get good oil that either meets or exceeds the manufactures requirements, fit good filters.
We have also seen in the work shop, turbo`s are passing more oil nowadays, egr systems, crank case breathers are dirtier than they were.
A dpf won`t make your oil dirtier, but regens will thin your oil down, I can`t count how many vehicles I`ve regened and seen the oil change warning / fault code listed. Told the owner of this and they aren't bothered. "Just regen it and I will come back for a service". Some of them think we are touting for work, well it`s not my engine.

Munch is right new sprinters exhausts will melt your eyes, was doing one yesterday Big Cry . But they are very clean, so the soot is very fine. Once we only had to worry about asbestosis, now it`s even finer particles, oh the joy ! Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

A big well done to the team at Matfords Exeter, I came home from Cardiff this weekend and the 90 complete with another new engine was parked in my drive waiting for me. Its all loaded back up with my equipment and ready to go. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

That's a bit worrying ! So Ford are recalling 2.2s that they have identified as high mileage.....being a cynic does this mean the ones they think might fail still in warranty rather than just outside....
