Scotland 2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Orkney Grey
Waiting on the AA!!
Just drove over 80 miles stopped to go into the shop and when getting back into the defender the steering lock came off as normal but the key just will NOT turn and start the engine!!

I've tried various things but it's not playing ball so ive had to call for recovery home.

Is this a common fault? Are these barrels known to fail? It's a 08 puma.

Stranded on the side of the road waiting for the AA, I'd try olive oil out of the shopping or some drips off the dipstick to get it unstuck, anything that's available.

Do not use WD40 on a lock (unless it's an absolute emergency and you have no other option) - it will dissolve the grease in your lock and then evaporates to leave no lubrication.

Use proper lock grease or as above - graphite powder. I dust my car locks every so often with graphite powder and they work with a lovely smooth action in all weathers.

There have been a few references to Defender steering locks being made of cheese - another symptom of 'value-engineering' and sourcing cheap components from the global marketplace.

Once the AA get you home it might be worth your while stripping the steering column shrouds off and seeing if anything else is causing the problem?

If you can get the key out and try some lubrication, bit of a wiggle - you might get it to release and work?

You're probably correct Cuthbert, I was working on the assumption that if its seized up, there may not be much grease in there, especially as it would have cost .00001p to put some in on assembly, and wd40 is a unseizing spray

There was an article somewhere about fixing the steering lock on a FFRR by drilling a hole in the mechanism and squirting loads of WD40 in, perhaps if that was followed by lashings of graphite liquid it would be a fix.

Hopefully he sorts it and gets home soon.

Over time I've had this happen four or five times to various LR's I've owned. Most of the problem has actualy been the key being worn, the last time it happened on my current Td5 I was at home, went back in the house for the spare key which is like new and the lock worked perfectly, so I got a new key cut off the spare and now use that. I totally agree with the use of graphite lubrication especially with winter coming as it helps to keep the locks from freezing.

When I bought my 110 earlier this year I knowtest the one key was bent and had a crack in it , went to key specilises in Shrewsbury and he cut the keys from a code so they would be like new he also lubed up all the locks Thumbs Up . Hope your all sorted now. Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

Thanks for the replies gents.

I got home and removed/replaced key and started 3-4 times no problem.

But as stated i do think the barrel was definitely stuck although its worked itself loose now. Although it WAS the used key and its slightly worn so im going to use the other key (still brand new) if it sticks again ill replace it.

In the mean time ill give it a bladt of graphite spray too.

You don't have to use a graphite spray product - the dry graphite powder also works very well - that is what I got from a very good locksmith and a very little goes a very long way .......

Anyway I hope Davie L gets an effective solution.

I have always just used vaseline. Force a little bit in with my fingers ( Surprised ) just before winter.

Had the same problem with my 08 110 had to get a new ignition barrel there re just cheap crap locks!
