Nothing bolts through the bumper bolts, bar the bumper,,
You have "lashing eyes" bolted through the chassis rails,, but would not want to tow the vehicle with these

Presume you meant a rear towbar ??

Reading my owners hand book on page 123 states (with pictures) towing eyes front and rear, for on road recovery
Which on my front one, shares a bolt with the front bumper!

I clearly miss under stood the question as to front or rear "tow hook"
But can't see what the fascination is regarding where my towing eye bolts to?
It's a standard landrover as it left the factory and that's where it's fixed!
Hope this helps you all. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Ian, may I politely suggest you have a good read of your manual.

I have just googled the Defender handbook and page 123 is NOT towing equipment as most of us understand towing equipment. Yes I know LR uses the expression towing points but they are lash down eyes with a single bolt through the chassis and does not use a bumper bolt.

It also includes the warning

Quote:

The front and rear lashing points must
only be used for securing the vehicle
during transportation. Use for any
other purpose may result in damage to the
vehicle, and serious injury

I took the information from HERE

Leeds......................I think you are getting yourself confused, I believe that Ian is talking about an eye that sits on top of the front bumper and the bumper bolts pass through it. They are used in a similar way to JAT rings. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Personally I give up, can't see why this is such an "issue"
My handbook calls them recovery eyes for road only recovery!
I don't really care where they are fixed, as long as bolted on somewhere to the chassis that's fine with me! Wink 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Richard, at first I was thinking along your lines, however have a good look at page 123 f the Defenders handbook.

The page is headed Vehicle Recovery.

It then refers to front and rear towing points and the diagrams clearly shows what we refer to as lash down eyes

It then has the following warnings

Quote:

The towing eyes at the front and rear of
the vehicle are designed for on-road
recovery only. If they are used for any
other purpose it may result in vehicle damage
and serious injury.
Never use the towing eyes to tow a
trailer, caravan etc. Doing so may
result in vehicle damage and serious
injury.
WARNING
The front and rear lashing points must
only be used for securing the vehicle
during transportation. Use for any
other purpose may result in damage to the
vehicle, and serious injury.

and

Quote:

TRANSPORTING THE VEHICLE
The recommended method for recovery or
transportation of the vehicle is on a transporter
or trailer designed for that purpose.
Ensure that transportation is carried out by
suitably qualified persons, and that the vehicle
is secured correctly.

Ian, those lash down eyes are meant for lashing down the Defender whilst recovering the vehicle on a flatbed or trailer. They are not suitable for towing a trailer or caravan. They are not suitable for towing/recovering a vehicle in an off road situation. If I look hard enough through my photos I have some showing the lash down eyes badly bent.

Hi Ian

No issue whatsoever here Rolling Eyes

All my Puma's from 2007, from the factory, have not had any item fixed via the 4 bolts (2 either side) that go on the front of the chassis rails, bar to hold the front bumper one, whether the std LR bumper or a winch bumper There were never any front towing eyes fixed through the bumper bolts from standard

People have fitted something like this, as a recovery eye

Personally i would prefer to fit something more substantial to use for recovery ie Jate rings ,, as would what a tad more metal to support the bolts

All Landrover fit as standard, are lashing rings to the side of the chassis rails at each corner, just as Brendan has posted above, and the instructions for their use California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Why would anyone want to tow a caravan or trailer on them?
I tend to use the tow bar on the back Whistle

Brendan, I see where your coming from but I as I see it and I'm sure many other people will, it LOOKS like a towing eye, simple as that!
Sure I would not use it to pull a defender up to its axles in mud, that would be stupid! But I'm sure many have used it for towing
Like I said, mine simply bolts through the front bumper bolt (right or wrong it does not worry me) which was the cause of all the confusion????

Let's leave it there as I am loosing the will to live Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
