England 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 CSW Keswick Green
Recommendations for a new owner
Hello all. I am due to join the Defender community. 110 SW arrives in a few weeks. Really looking forward to it. Have seen some of the tales: Leaky doors, rust, squeaky clutches, fragile mechanics etc. am thinking, what should I do when i get it, to give it the best chance of reliably surviving in tact, or at least, reducing potential problems?

Would welcome any advice on what it would be wise to do on delivery.

Thanks.

Congratulations on joining the Defender fraternity... Thumbs Up

One of the first things everyone will say is an absolute must is to have it Dinitrol'd before even driving it... Whistle

Otherwise, take you time, enjoy and do whatever you fancy along the way... Mr. Green

Oh, and you might need to think about one or three layers of security to keep your precious safe... Shocked

Welcome

Get it under sealed.
Just look after it and you will love it.
What you have to remember is there a lot of people on here and mostly they are looking for advise when their car when it goes wrong,
They are not as unreliable as you would read. there are loads of mods that you can do just have a look around if thats what you want to achieve with your new one.

Enjoy it and please post a load of pics when it arrives.

Thumbs Up

Please, please, PLEASE ... Fit a tracker. Far too many getting nicked, a surprising number of which don't have a tracker fitted.
Rolling Eyes Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

As Jay Boy says, people generally come on to a forum when they have a problem, not when things are running well. Mine arrived in September & I'm about 3k miles into it now, including a 200 mile motorway trip every & a day off road every week.

No leaks, squeaks or rattles so far. If anything it just gets better as its run in.

When I got it the first thing I did was to run it in to Zagato for the Dinitrol treatment. He does a fantastic job & well worth doing.

Take time to understand it, drive it with mechanical sympathy, in a relaxed way and it will reward you. Drive it like a teenager in a Vauxhall Corsa on the way to a hot date and it will disappoint and then totally frustrate you.

I'd recommend you spray some sort of protection over and inside the chassis - but the application ain't rocket science and can easily be done on a warm day for a fraction of what some companies are charging.

In some areas Defenders are very attractive to thieves - in other areas less so. Decide for yourself how many 'layers' of protection you require. Personally I believe their is too much paranoia on the topic - I fitted an Adrenalin pedal lock and I've never had any thieving related problems in Yorkshire, Lancashire. Ireland or Scotland.

Don't look at this forum... you will end up spending a lot on mods for it, so many around

Wow, so many thoughtful replies, so quickly. Thanks to all. Take on board the points about why it looks unreliable on the site. This looks to be a great source of useful hints if something does go wrong.

Will book the waxoyl or dinitrol treatment for first week.

Will look at the discussions on security. Had a car recovered a few years back on a tracker. Not cheap, but better than the alternative, and take no time to arm / disarm each trip. Will also go for something visible, to deter the opportunists. But, in the end, if they are organised and you're the target, they'll get it. So don't worry about it, nor scrimp on the insurance co.!

It's a Keswick green base model, with a few creature comforts. Will post pics on the big day! Then run it in carefully and wait for squeaks, rattles, leaks....!

Thanks again. Merry Christmas.

Martin

Well do you want to tell that to our ex insurance company?

One stolen roof rack and roof tent!

Do you want to tell that to Hazels insurance company? Stolen 90

Or do you want to tell it to Gary who had doors stolen off his new 90?

Or Alan who had 5 doors stolen off his 10 day old 110

Now what about the GP in Halifax who had his 110 stripped on his drive in Halifax February time

Now you might be have been lucky, and hopefully you will continue to be lucky.

However do not tell me I am paranoid about the thieving scumbags as they exist and are active. The thieving scumbags are active in different areas apart from Yorkshire.
