Hi Rob,

Sorry for the delayed reply. Work has been crazy busy so not much time to get on here!

You guessed correctly about the pipe from the t piece going to the FIP. This does leave the outlet from the turbo that needs blanking. I have not yet found a blanking plug for it as it is an odd thread - I think it is a BSF thread. So I have just a temp blanking pipe on it at present.

The actual effect of this mod is it ensures there is the full 1 bar of turbo pressure at the manifold by the turbo vanes moving to give more boost at any given engine revs.

When the fuelling is matched to this you get a very useable increase in power. Probably just what you are looking for if you think your set up is not producing what you feel it should.

Love your engine ocd! So pleased it's not just me!

Thank you for confirming what I thought. I have started a build thread as requested on the "My Defender" board. I Have bought the T-Piece and the banjo to carry out your mod, I'll get it done and report back. I am also looking at getting my exhaust manifold ceramic coated as well.

Cheers

Rob

I just did this mod to my 110. I have a fullsize Allisport IC and VNT bolt on turbo. There is definitely a slight difference. It still isn't a rocket ship, but during acceleration it seems to keep boosting longer when you lift off the throttle to change gear. Atleast in my case it made it feel more spritely and smoother. Previously I had trouble with long inclines, it always lost alot of speed, now I can actually accelerate uphill. To me it seems like an easy and worthwhile mod. This is my first impression anyway. Now done about 600km like this and have found nothing to complain about.

Really like the sound of this...
I'm running a big allard cooler and a new garret turbo wid silicone and stainless pipes
My only worry is the inlet manifolds get quite gunked up internally and will this pass to the boost actuator or inj pump more readily over time?

I've a blanked off EGR but there is still a small amount of oily residue in the pipes and intake manifold. I don't think it's anything to worry about really. The pipes are easy to clean and/or replace and besides, you're looking at a closed loop system. Changing the boost pick-up point further down the line shouldn't make any real difference IMHO.

Is taking the boost from the turbo location cleaner than the inlet manifold?
I wonder if that's why the standard location was chosen
I like the sound of this upgrade a lot but wonder if the actuator etc is going to be at more risk of contamination?

No, the turbo is what's pushing the oily residue through in the first place. The further away you are from it then the less likely you are to see any of it. But in practise there's really no difference.

Very good
I think I'll order a twin output banjo and bolt with washers, a brass T piece and then fit it along with a barbed Inline reducer for the boost pipe that supplies my gauge
I've got an old turbo sitting so I'll pop to my local hydraulic specialist and get the turbo outlet blank sorted, they'll be able to check the thread size etc then I'll get my actual turbo blanked and modded
I'm running a big allard cooler, tweek'd pump and a hybrid Tdi into Tdci exhaust
Along with a minor pump timing advance it'll be interesting to see how this mod works

If you remove the breather pipe from the air intake aswell as blanking the EGR there is no gunk to be pulled in and all stays spotless.

Hi guys, interesting thread, will look to try this on my tgv (just no wastegate to worry about) where did you get the manifold banjo fittings from? Cheers

i was thinking about this

wastegate off the manifold i can follow so its doesnt open until it sees full boost achieved at manifold (ie closer to inlet)

in essence then we are saying that if pressure is taken at turbo itself its a higher pressure than at the manifold.

so surely FiP is better having that higher pressure sooner to get the pin to depress quicker?

moving it to the manifold would make the FiP pressure feed lazy. Cheers

Hi Guys, I've been thinking about this mod and thought I'd do a little experiment.

I got two boost gauges, connected them together and synchronised them so they read the same, using a bicycle pump to control the pressure in the hose.
One gauge was connected to the manifold using a banjo fitting as per the OP, and the other was connected into the wastegate/FIP connector at the turbo. The engine is an ex Disco 200Tdi in a 90, max boost is 15psi reached at 3000rpm and higher.

The Results: Both gauges moved at the same rate and reading 90% of the time. On occasions the turbo gauge was 1 to 2 psi higher than the manifold gauge generally around the 5 to 12psi range. This difference didn't last long as when the turbo gauge stopped climbing the manifold gauge soon caught up.

I'm with jst on this point

Conclusion:
If you want to do this mod, and your butt dyno feels a difference, then go ahead and do it. Personally I think I'll leave mine as LR designed it.
