New family member
Well,

After several weeks of negotiations with the kids (they like it), the wife (she also like it) and me (quite reluctant) we had a new member in the family.

A Border Collie, 4 month old (pictures later).

Now we are in the process to teach him and customize him to travel in the back of the Defender to the farm and beyond.

Any ideas or recomendations to take care of the new acquisition will be aprecciated.

180 Degrees for about an hour and a half, season with salt and pepper, tastes like chicken apparently!

Try and find a good dog training club obidience or working trails or agility. It will need alot of stimulation both mental and physical. Try and read some books on dog training. Do lots of training with it and you will have a wonderful addition to the family(if not they can become a nughtmare).

If you got sky watch The dog whisper he is very good.

Remeber you are in charge and not the dog, he/she must be the lowest member of your family/pack.

Good luck and have alot of fun.

Good stuff

I have two boarder collies 9 and 3.

One is a 6th generation working collie: classic farm type, one is more of a highland collie (bigger)

The old is the top of intelligence, can work sheep, do search and rescue, sleep all day and not care, play you for whatever he needs, has pressence, can sing to the tv and songs, (they both whatch tv), both recognise themselves in a mirror, learnt commands in about an hour.

The younger farm collie is clever but more scatty and much more farm like - i wouldnt fully trust him

The older one is fully trust worthy - there isnt an environment he hasnt been in (planes, boats, mountains, cities, cars, strange places etc) and he has proven his trust worthy ability...except for eating food that he knows isnt his Evil or Very Mad like my dinner one night when i was out(which he knew was mine).

What im saying is boarder collies can be very different, super intelligent - not always trust worthy around children (can treat them like sheep and heard - when they dont move they nip them to move them on), can need lots of attention and excerise (but not always, so dont believe the hype), very loyal to one - a great dog but not a normal dog and a dog you need to prepare for (by knowing what to expect and what to do with it)

Have a lot of fun - there isnt another dog i would want (my mom has 7 of differening breads and is a breader and my uncle 3 of different breads again) so i use that as qualification. Mike

a dog crate can be a god send giving it some of its own space at home and one in the vehicle will give it some security plus keep the back cleaner and you can pack stuff in and around a crate which you cant do if the dog is loose! Cheers

Thanks for all the tips.
As I can see a dog crate is a must.
We are now taking contact with a trainer in order to have some recomendations to theach him good manners.
