Td5 (1999) clicking noise from instrument cluster
Hi all

I have a clicking noise emanating from the instrument cluster. It is intermittent and alters in volume and appears to be roughly related to road speed but not always. My research tells me that I don’t have a speedo cable so I have no idea what may be creating this noise which is starting to drive me nuts. Any ideas?

Cheers - Simon

Relays often click, sometimes when they are not functioning correctly. Check that all your electrics are working. There are a handful of relays that just lie at the bottom of shelf behind the instrument cluster. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Is it dependant on what you have switched on. Does it occur when you have your lights, radio and heather/blower off? www.td5.org

I could be the bonnet rattling in the hinge as this cand sound like a light tapping. To test you can stuff a small bit of rubber or cloth in the top gap of the hinge bush and take her for a drive.

@ me@td5.org

I have turned everthing off, lights, fan, radio(s), a/c all together and invidually (every combination) and at first I thought it had made some difference, particulalry to the volumn of the noise (quiter) but I am now not so sure. Either way the noise is still there and still appears to have some relationship to vehicle road speed and still comes and goes.

It is not the bonnet rattling.. it definitly eminates from the instrument cluster

Any other thoughts?

Cheers

Simon

Could it be the speedo head itself ? Try disconnecting the wire from the speedo transducer ( on the back of the transfer box behind the transmission brake drum) and see if the noise stops without the speedo working. 2005 Td5 90 XS
