top one would be more like a genuine one very thin ,BUT this type is ok if both bits are new if your fitting one new section to a old section then the bottom one would seal better as its thicker and softer then the top one
two new sections with new straight ends then top one fine one old one new then bottom one as the old part will be rusty and bit mis shaped on the flanges then fit bottom one but to be sure whatever gasket you used , I would say a small amount of exhaust sealer wouldn't hurt anyway Last edited by munch90 on 9th Oct 2014 4:04pm.  .I'll pull em apart,then see. Also gonna paint the cat and rear box,anybody have an opinion on what paint to use.There is sound theory that keeping the gases hot (insulation) improves the flow,thus more power.Any opinions?? Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5. |

don't bother would be my advice no way your ever get paint to stick any good on a exhaust , yes you can get high temperature paint but getting it to stick and stay stuck on is another thing ( paint puts up with heat but peels off after a while in big lumps )
any exhaust you see "painted" would be enamelled or blasted then metal sprayed or ceramic coated , chromed etc to last paint wont make any difference to keeping heat in wrapping the exhaust is done but normally only front pipes (wrapped in glass fibre mat normally ) |

You could use something like this, tried a similar coating on the exhaust manifolds on my racer, did make a slight difference to heat transmitted through the tunnel.

So the zorst is off,whilst the back box is generally very good condition the flanges have lost quite a bit of metal,tho the mating surface is fine (pitted but flat),what do you think, re-fit or buy new, I can get a new take off back box for £40 ish.

I would replace if you can get one cheap , another job you wouldn't have to do for a while then
good sealers - gun gum , fire gum , bloseal all much the same really ( used blo seal for years , but not sure if you can get it in small tubes , I get it in the tubes for the mastic style trigger guns ) you don't want a exhaust repair putty it's bit thick , you want exhaust assembly paste |

don't use loads of sealer ( if it oozes out the outside then it's oozing out inside as well ) no point in causing a smaller hole on inside
if your going to take a while before bolting it all up tight , wet (water) the surface of the sealer it will stop it going hard too quick |
