What is the rating stamped on the end of the bolt heads??
If we know that we can work out how much force would take to shear those bolts.. If the winch you are going to mount can't pull as much as will take to break to bolt then you're fine. Oh also what size is the bolt Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

Cheers i didn't think of that but i will remove one of the bolts later measure it and see if i can read anything on the bolt head and get back to you later

bumper bolts are m10 , BUT you need to know the grade of metal which should be stamped on the head
if you cant find the markings , may be easier to get new ones that are marked , so you know there right just in case someone has put weaker bolts in you could get some cap socket ( allen ) bolts then resin the holes in the heads to help with security to stop someone unbolting your bumper something like this eBay item number: eBay Item No. 360611556348 |

Standard front bumper bolts are the usual off-the-shelf HT grade 8.8. A winch bumper is usually also braced to the lashing ring mounting point on the chassis (IIRC again M10/8.
 , so a minimum of 6 mounting mounts. This is entirely adequate for normal winches (if you're fitting a 12,000lbf winch you might want to add reinforcement, but 8,000lbf or 10,000lbf should be fine).
You can opt for socket head caps in place of hex head bolts, by default these are grade 10.9. Bear in mind though that it is probably better to rip the bumper of the chassis than to rip the mounting mounts out of the chassis, so there's no real point making the bolts the strongest part of the system. Make sure you know what you're doing with your winch and you'll be fine. Remember that if you double the line back to the front bumper you're potentially doubling the load on the bumper (I have seen people run a triple line using two snatch blocks back to the bumper of the winching vehicle before now - enough to make me (in the words of Mythbusters) "de-ass the area wit' the quickness"). |

Yeah i removed all 4 bolts in the end but couldn't work out what was stamped on them so as what has been said i will buy some new ones as you say they could be the wrong ones already fitted anyway  Graham
