Body corrosion repair
Hello all,

I have just managed to find a replacement Very Happy for my truck stolen back in October last year. Big Cry

It's taken a long time to find a straight one at the right price but it does have the inevitable patches of mixed metal corrosion. Granted, prevention is better than cure and I'll be following the steps in the excellent corrosion prevention thread however I'm keen to repair what I can see also. My question is, aside from replacing whole panels, what is the recommended approach to treat body corrosion of the following two types:

(i) Light corrosion bubbling under the surface such as this example next to a rivet on the body side :

(ii) More severe corrosion which has broken the surface such as this example on the rear body below the rear door (incidentally, I'm not sure this panel can be replaced as a separate piece??)

Whatever I do, I suspect I'm only really delaying replacing panels but I'm interested in the experience of the group for other medium term fixes.

Can I ask what you did in the end?

I have a similar query, lots of little area as shown in picture 1.

I'm thinking its a question of sanding back to base Ali, then etch and paint.....

Hi Andy,

In short, I'm still working on it. The collected wisdom seems to be :
(a) prevention is better than cure
(b) to truly sort the problem replace the panel (not always practical or cheap) and anything else will delay the return of the corrosion but not cure it.

In cleaning up the area shown in the second picture it turns out there was a large amount of mud holding moisture against the inside of the panel which caused the problem.

I'll be booking my truck into a local LR specialist to get the repairs done then religiously following the corrosion prevention guide on this forum.

Having said that if this is the worst problem I discover with the new truck then I'll be happy!

Ken Wheelwright - renowned Series One restorer told me he used vinegar on such corrosion to get rid of it. I presume that it neutralises the oxidation? Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....
