For what it's worth I bought a road version recently (admittedly second hand but it had only been riden once!) and can't fault it for the price. I don't know that much about road bikes though, however, some colleagues are heavily in to cycling and they are very impressed by them for the money and own several.
I'm not usually a fan of Halfords but they have been impressive with this so far.
Hope that helps.
T.

Apologies it's only referencing road bikes. It normally p£$@&% me off when people provide an answer to something different from the question!!!

The context may help though.

tbh, having family that own bike shops and i often work there... boardman are not great, get tons of people on the c2c in with problems with them...

a better alternative for a good budget bike is merida... they produce nearly all of specialised's bikes and some of the more pricier options are real nice bikes...

Not being into the cycling scene I don't really understand what makes one bike better than the other. It only seems to be he frame which differs, hue bikes are made from a random selection of components from several manufacturers. Assuming a Boardman bike had the same components as a Merida, what makes the Merida better?

Chris Boardman has just sold his company to Halfords, I think the deal was worth something in the region of £20 million, Halfords have been selling his bikes for the last few years, he's staying on as chief designer (I think).
I've always stuck to Giant bikes which are made in the same factory as Specialised.

gemoetry is the biggest thing in cycling, yes you can change the stem, offset seat post different bars

best thing to do is ride them,

but merida to keep costs down tooling wise use the same quality tubing on all bikes.. kids bikes are the same tubing as a 3k bike.

best thing with any bike is demo it..

No, I ended with a Cube but did seriously consider a boardman, the spec is high for the price however the build from Halfords can be hit and miss

Two of my friends (who I ride with) have them.

My pal has the Hardtail, which in his spec was around £1000.
My brother-in-law has the full suss, which was around £1500.

The real benefit for both of them was that their companies used Halfords for the cycle2work scheme which is going on (i.e. you get them tax free, and also pay for them over 12 months) - which is quite a benefit Thumbs Up

Other than that, they do seem reasonable value, and quite decent bikes for the price bracket. If you get cycle2work - go for it! With a 40% saving they're great! If you don't get cycle2work, they're still pretty good, but you could maybe shop around and get a similar quality MTB for a bit less... 2015 bikes will be coming out soon, so there will be deals on "last years colours"...

Depending on what you want if for (i.e. recreational cycling, regular mountain biking, or full-on stuff) you may get differing advice.

EDIT - I just compared the £849 version of the Boardman and the same price On-One.
The On-One has Rockshox Reba forks...much higher spec that the forks on the Boardman
They both have decent SRAM gearing hardware
Weight is 300g apart - very similar

Pays your money & takes your choice - the Boardman looks around the price it should be ...but great if you save 40% on C2W...

On One http://www.on-one.co.uk/c/q/bikes/mountain-bikes may be worth a look...good value, designed in UK by enthusiasts... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)
