Td5 turns over but won't start sometimes
My 1998 td5 defender fails to start sometimes and I have to use easy start (used about 6 times ) now easy start won't work , but if you push start it , it fires . I've replaced the air flow meter thinking it was that but it wasn't. I've read up it mite be the start solenoid not sending a signal to the injectors to open .

Any help would be much appreciated as I rely on the truck for my plant hire buisness.

Tom

Does it turn over Tom? Or just the click from the relay?

If it doesn't turn over it could be the starter solenoid, I replaced mine recently due to mine not turning over occasionally which became worse towards the end.

Yes it's turns over . I've taken the battery off a couple times and left it an hour then it's Started , only worked twice . I've also had oil in the ECU Plug so cleaned it with electrical cleaner , could that be part of that problem ?

Yes oil in the loom could be part of the problem, have you changed the injector loom? This is where the oil enters the loom and works it's way down to the ecu plug.

I would certainly change the loom for a genuine one, try Dan at Duckworths landrover for the part. You'll also need to clean the loom plug regularly until the oil in the loom has worked it way out.

The looms aren't too expensive, £30-40 for a genuine one from memory, always worth fitting a genuine loom, I changed the rocker cover gasket too when I did mine.

If the engine is turning over I wouldn't have thought it be the solenoid or starter related.

Cool I'll get that replaced , can you think of anything else it could be Chris ? because I have totally cleaned and dried the plug 3 days ago and it has been fine since untill today , the plug is still totally clean , the problem comes back every couple of days max

It could be a number of things but a pt least you know there is a problem with the loom and it won't hurt to get that sorted.

It could be the starter motor as you mentioned in the first post, crank sensor and associated wiring.

Another common problem with td5 is the fuel pump, does the problem arise when fuel is below half a tank or getting low? Can you here the fuel pump prime and does it sound loud or unusual?

Now you say it does happen wen there's 1/4 tank or lower and the pump is noisy and gurgling on start up . If the pump isn't putting the fuel trough at the correct pressure will that stop it starting ?

I had this problem on my td5, after a new fuel filter housing was fitted.
The fuel seemed to drain back to the tank or become air locked when it got below 1/4 tank, I used to have to prime the fuel pump three or four times, put the accelerator flat to the floor and crank the engine continuously until it started as per the handbook. 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Have you had the error codes read sounds like a crank position sensor fault. 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

First time on the dio machine it came up with a lot of codes so he cleared them all , he put it on two days later and only the air flow meter had reappeared . Is there a chance that just removing and cleaning the crank sensor could get me away and prove it is that ?

Does it cut out while driving? It could be injector seals and washers (again only replace with genuine) if the fuel pump is gurgling the seals could be letting air in.

Yes it's cut out twice while driving but mainly fails on start up. I'm on my way to pick up a set of genuine seals . Do I need all 5 seals ? And how hard are they to fit ?

Thanks
