Hi chaps I'm after some advice about a motor I'm going to see tomorrow
eBay Item No. 301179211499 I know most people wouldn't touch it with a barge pole but it's around 6k cheaper than an equivalent car. I know my way around a car and can spot a botched repair/ringer etc a mile off and I can finish the remaining tidy up jobs no problem, but it's the hpi status that alarms me as I know cat A+B are never to go back on the road and this has been supposedly cat B! I've spoke to the seller and he says it has a full V5c and has mot and been taxed since the repair and that DVLA have no marker at all on the vehicle and it dos'nt need or had a vic check. A hpi will bring up a cat B so what's up with it? And could this ever be changed on the status as the seller seems to think it is a mistake on the system and it is may be a insurance cock up on a minor repair. Cheers chaps. To be fair I'm not hedging any bets that it wasn't a write off just not a cat B. I'll be fully checking with the DVLA before parting with any hard earned.
It is a lot of money but at least 5k behind other cars of similar milage etc, I'm intrested in the car to use and drive potentially hard so I wouldn't feel comfortable hammering a top money low milage example. All CAT B cars have there ID's removed before sale, they are then sold to registered breakers that are not allowed to repair them as they are parts only cars. You need to make sure that this car has not been rung with an identity from a parts car. A car as valuable as a Focus RS would have to be totally destroyed for the insurance company to declare it as a CAT B. If you were seriously interested in this I would take it to a Ford dealer to get them to check the Vin number stored on its modules before buying it.

 I didn't know that id was removed on break only cars. I'll certainly be physically checking around all usual id points on the car and on your advice be checking with Ford. Formerly mao99999

A lot of B's go out of the country now, most to Poland and the like, I don't know if these ones have there ID's removed. Be careful.

50K miles and the leather seat has worn through as if it’s done 150K miles. Either that or it’s taken a whack to the OS and it’s been hard enough that they’ve needed to replace the drivers seat. I’d drive behind it and make sure it’s not crabbing down the rode, It could have been jigged properly or bodged.
If you were going to repair it properly why would you bung in a crap seat and not finish the paint work to a high standard? especially on a car like this. Smells dodgy to me. Nick 2.2 110 Tipper |

I would have thought that if it is a simple case of phoning DVLA to square away any anomolies it would be in the best interest of the seller to do exactly that? It wouldn't then potentially put people off and command a higher price.
If a bargain is too good to be true it there's normally a damn good reason and I can't see it! Keep your 'desire' for this vehicle in check and exhaust every avenue including a test drive, phonecall to DVLA etc. You could also let someone experienced do the donkey work.  Gauge the seller's reaction if you request an AA or RAC inspection. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

In my eyes this isn't a "too good to be true" sort of deal 14+k is a lot for a 4 year old car and only worth that sort of money due to the over inflated artifical pricing of the "clean straight" examples.
Normally for a previously damaged catorgry c or d vehicle I would discount around 25% of the good private book price and this is reflected on this car. I've never had much to do with a cat B though as I thought they were only broken for parts. I haven't had a chance to view today I'm going tomorrow but according to DVLA there is no VIC check marker or has it ever been subjected to one! The HPI check does show a cat B from late 2013! The seller in my opinion is being a little vague and probably knows more than he's letting on! Also when I do a DVLA vehicle enquiry it won't show the ved rate? Once I take a look at the repairs, id checks and the general appearance I may contact a dealer and if o.k could consider taking a punt 
If I don't I'll probably end up spending £19k+ on a older but level car. 90% of all the cars I've ever run have been Cat C or D, as said B shouldn't be on the road. I have bought an 'unrecorded' theft before, but HPI brought it up as a Cat D. Called DVLA etc and turned out Cat D listing was a mistake, and Cat D status had been removed when I HPI'd it later on, so it is possible that it's an error, but I'd still be very careful with the Focus

mao99999 have you looked at the car yet? I know of a few people who are having problems with Pumaspeed at the moment so would be very cautious.
