Hi there
Mines away at the body shop at the moment having some bits resprayed under warranty and im paying for a couple of dents taken out where I left a spanner on my wheel box and dented it from the inside out, although there much smaller and not as bad as those shown. It will work out pretty expensive though for an older 90 and im only having mine done to get it back to immaculate to sell. Personally your best bet and my advice would be to live with it or try and find a second hand pair in that colour if your in no rush. Without a doubt it will be cheaper. Ill update tomorrow where mines being done, but its an approved bodyshop (Hamilton or something, I cant remember despite the courtesy car being plastered in stickers!) Not what you want to hear but unless you can get a mates rates backstreet low over heads type job, id leave it and see if you can find a set of wings, never know you might get lucky. I'd wager those would be a fairly easy tap out for a skilled panel beater - unless the alloy is already splitting. On an old Defender a few dents just add character. Even my brand new Defender has a few character marks from spot welds and panel distortion - and I wasn't expecting a Bentley standard of panel fabrication and finish.

I'll also add that there are some mobile dent removal outfits that are a lot cheaper than a bodyshop. I took a car down to our local bodyshop after it was dented by a shopping trolley - the bodyshop boss said it wasn't worth his time and gave me the phone number of 'a man in a van' who tours all the local second-hand car companies removing dents and chips. His work was first-class and his prices were rock-bottom as his main customers are trade.

Cheers, I do have a local garage that I'm mates with, but I wasnt sure if it's a normal job for a garage, is it not specialist, I had a dent man to remove 3 dents from the wife's Shogun a couple of weeks ago where a flying branch had hit the bonnet and one where I'd opened the door onto the vice in the garage.

A lot of the mobile "dent Men" won't touch alloy panels California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

I recon that might be "Hilton coach works". There are people out there who do a great job, if you can find a good guy you can discuss level of repair against cost. I know of a good sprayer, but local to me. Andy |

Tha'ts the one Andy, well done (I was pretty close despite driving there lousy A class for a week now
 ). They seem very professional and have done an unnoticeable job for us on other cars in the past. 
Only Reason I said about paint is it looks like the paint is cracked anyway from your pictures Lamby? So If you have the dents removed, it might end up nice and smooth, but you'll still have cracks in the paint. Especially if you know a good painter/ repair go and see them and discuss what you want for the best price. Defender puma dormobile camper |

As TJ says some dent guys won't touch ally as it obviously has different characteristics than steel and does not work back to shape the same way. That kind of damage is common and often the cheapest option is to unbolt the wing outers and replace with new and refinish to match. Likewise the headlamp panel although they have a line of spotwelds by the grille panel but once that's out of the way they are easy to drill out. That way you know the next time you dent it you won't have a chunk of filler fall out. Steve.

A Land Rover is one of the few vehicles where dents and scratches look good... it makes it look like it has been used as was intended.

The difficulty in removing dents from a Defender (or earlier vehicle) is that the alloy "work hardens" making it brittle, which means that it must be annealed to soften it before it can be reworked. Quite often the dent itself work hardens the panel enough to prevent any success knocking it out without annealing. Annealing of course destroys the paint.
Although a skilled panel beater can repair alloy panels more easily than steel, it is a different skill set to those found in most bodyshops now. If you can find a good coach builder or panel beater he should be able to make those dents disappear, but you will need to respray the areas afterwards. |
