Check your exhaust manifold as they have been known to crack and also warp Whistle

Are you talking about the Jetsons space-car type whistle from the side air intake? I think they all do it unless you have a RAI fitted. Not turbo noise - just inlet airflow. 2007 Defender 110

Sounds like you have a warped manifold to turbo flange Shocked I had this issue with the re-mapped Utility. I never replaced the re-map once the problem was fixed. I also found that the exhaust manifold had shrunk and could not be replaced. The fix was a new exhaust manifold, remove the turbo skim the flange flat and replace.
I do a lot of loaded, long motorway runs. I think that under these conditions there is a heat build up in the exhaust manifold that causes these issues.
Not saying that this happens to every re-mapped vehicle, I know its happened to some.

Here are some pictures of the problem

This is where the problem is, the thin metal gasket is causing the whistle as gasses escape from between the flanges. A bit like placing your thumbs together with a blade of grass between them and blowing.

Humm,

Mine have a whistle Sad (similar to a belt slipeery). Should be repaired tomorrow (I hope).
Appears over the 1800 RMP in the 2nd and up gear. According to the dealer the problem is a seal.

According to the dealers is the 2nd car that had this problem here.

Cheers Eduardo

I have developed an induction noise which I think may be this - when pulling hard at reasonable speed (for example powering up a fast hill) there is a noise a bit like a drive belt slipping. It is engine speed related, it stops if you ease off the accelerator and resumes as soon as you hit the power, and it seems to happen more when the engine is really hot, ie well into a fast road run. It can only be induction related, I think.

Does this sound like the same problem?

Eduardo, did you get yours fixed? Was it the turbo flange?

Thanks!

AndrewS,

I don't have a whistle (had a noise a bit like a cat purring at a certain rpm prior to fitting my RAI) but I do like your clear, concise explanation and photographs of the problem. Thumbs Up Just a polite observation. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Yes, was fixed under guarantee and now works without any problem.
Regarding the turbo flange, see the Andrews pictures

I currently have the parts to replace the gasket (and reface the flange if ned be) on order (not in stock at the local dealer, would you believe) but in the meantime my banshee-like shreik has become a really loud hissing. I suspect that the vibrating bit of the gasket has blown out altogether (at least I hope that that is what has happened). Hopefully I will get the parts and be ablet o have a look tomorrow.

The noise doesn't bother me too much, but IU am worried that there must be a lot of very ot exhaust gasses going somewhere they shouldn't.

I notice that the workshop manual says that the exhaust manifold/turbo studs and nuts must be removed and discarded and new parts used if the turbo is removed from the vehicle (ditto for the turbo to cat fasteners). Anyone know why this is and what happens if you don't?

The reason I ask is that the dealer who has supplied the parts for me to replace my gasket has found that the manifold studs are now officially "not available" as spares with no forecast availability date, although it seems that there are three dealers in the country who still have stocks for warranty repairs only.

Is there anything special about these studs?

Also, the "studs" for the turbo to cat joint (microcat calls the studs, but the dealer told me that they are bolts, although he probably really means machine screws) cost a staggering £11.something each, although they seem to be normal M10 setscrews!

A further question (sorry!), can anyone tell me if there is meant to be a fastener in the hole in the top left of the photo below, holding the bracket for the cat and the bracket for the heatshield to the manifold?

I don't have anything in this hole and I wonder if that is why the gasket failed.

My apologies for pinching the photo from an earlier post in this thread.
