Grating from OSF Suspension- help?
I'm having trouble locating the cause of a grating noise from the OSF suspension on my 110. When it's articulating up into the arch there is a grating noise as if something is rubbing but I can't find any evidence of
this, also get a slight knock when cornering to the left (ie all weight towards OSF wheel).

My local mechanic thought it was the wheel bearing which had a bit of play but that's now been adjusted up and I still get the problem. The knock is much less pronounced but the grating is there. I initially thought maybe a
broken coil spring or knackered suspension bushes but it all looks OK.

Any ideas? Andy

Grating occurs when wheels straight too but only when really articulating Andy

What tyres are you running? Are they rubbing on the arches? I'm sure you've already thought of this.

I recon drive flanges or half shafts mate, jack it up and check for play putting it in gear and turning the wheel, just rock it and see if there is any major movement. You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things

After much investigation it turns out that the grating noise I could hear when the suspension was fully articulating turns out to be the rear tyres rubbing on the spring seats at the top. Rather odd as the alloys are O.E. Freestyle and the tyres are 265/75/16 which I have run before on a Defender with no issues.

Very strange but definitely the cause as I can see the shiny patch on the spring mount where it has rubbed and could see the tyre touching when I crawled underneath!! Andy

In some respects yes but also can't understand why the tyres rub as this is a commonly fitted size, can only assume the offset of the Freestyle alloys is the problem.

Going to change for 285/75/16 soon so will probably go the modular steel route to avoid future problems. Andy

I have the same size tyres and I have no issues yet, I have inspected underneath too to make sure. I too have steel modulars, so a cheapish option if you don't want to change 5 tyres Thumbs Up
