Today (and the past few days) we have had very heavy, dense fog all the time, with extremely reduced visibility. Why is it so many people drive in such conditions with NO lights on? They are near as dammit invisible until you are within a few meters of them! This is not isolated individuals it is dozens of people driving all kinds of vehicles including lorries.I'm sad to say I also saw at least one Defender totally unlit on a country road in dense fog. If fog is so bad that half of the aeroplanes in the country are grounded you can be pretty such you need your lights on! This leads me onto the next point, in an ideal world these retards would be pulled over, given a sharp talking to and a fine/points and maybe they would think twice next time. However, where are the police? We have basically handed road safety over to "safety cameras" which focus ONLY on speed, but are unable to deal with the point I have made above, among others. When I was a kid you used to see police cars everywhere, especially on motorways up those embankment ramp things at the side. These days they are empty of have a HATO parked in them...we are way, way too lax on all the crap drivers out there, they should be taken off the road. 2011 110 USW

Totally agree with you. I do wonder since so many new cars have auto headlights that drivers are forgetting to turn them on manually when conditions are poor.

^^ can't say I am convinced by that, you would think they would still check. People are just lazy and ignorant. I also wonder how many people driving around actually passed a driving test in the UK? Standards just are not as good as they used to be, common sense seems to be a thing of the past now, and as I said above, enforcement is virtually non-existent. I even see cars driving along with the wing mirrors folded-up. How do they get away with it? 2011 110 USW

I also think modern cars give people a false sense of security. People seem to have little idea of stopping distances or an awareness of what is actually going on around them. I don't know what the answer to this is. Any ideas?

Remove all seat belts . People will tend to drive more slowly and carefully. Those that don't will help out with the Transplant Waiting Lists and gradually over a period of time the quality of driving will improve as the bad/ stupid drivers are gradually culled by their own deeds. ^^ make everyone drive a 1950s or 60s car for the first few years, that should sort them out.

I reckon in the past, before all this safety crap was added to cars (you know, before they got all fat and bloated) the mongs would usually off themselves pretty quickly, or have a narrow escape which would shake them up enough to make them behave, leaving the sensible folk to get on with the driving. Now they just crash, crash and crash again, with the design of the car keeping them alive. That and totally lax law enforcement mean they are out there, risking their own lives as well as yours, mine, your mum, your dad, and everyone else.

I also think the vast array of toys in cars now is a distraction, all the ICE, satnavs, aircon and a thousand other buttons and switches to play with. The rise of mobile phones must also be a consideration. I saw a car with no lights on in the fog today, as it got close I spotted the lady driving it nattering away on her phone. I think we have strayed a bit from Marcus's point that a defender is not a modern safety conscious car that the discovery or Range Rover is, that is why its production is being ceased Crying or Very sad

To be fair to Landrover they never sell it as a safe family vehicle its a go anywhere commercial vehicle & like all commercial vehicles with a higher centre of gravity roll over is a big risk in an accident.

My wife has a skoda fabia, safetywise it beats the defender hands down but if I was in an accident between the two cars I would still probably prefer to be in the defender, but my daughter is now nearly 21 so I'm not a family man looking for a vehicle to carry children in so to Marcus I would suggest a Discovery - you get all the advantages of a go anywhere vehicle with the safety features of a modern car.

Defenders do roll over, my daughter is at an agricultural college & a lot of the boys drive defenders and as youngsters a lot have rolled them, most off road at relatively low speed but some on the roads & all have ended up with a dented ego along with a defender but no "thank god" serious injuries.

Defenders like everything in life is a compromise unless you are extremely rich, as such you compromise safety for higher ground clearance & driving view that sometimes enables you to get out of trouble before you get into it because of the better view & generally slower speeds.

I've been driving nearly 35 years, driving standards have got a lot worse, as 22900013A has said distractions & the number of people on the phone whilst driving is atrocious.

Yes some do have them...most don't, and those that have cages most are locally made.

I have seen both internal cages and external cages.


But recently a few excellent quality import cages have been seen.

I totally agree with CATERHAM, I live in Lima the traffic is very agressive and different than yours, and when I drive the 110 I drive more carefully and slower than when Im in the D3 or the golf, and the others drivers do not try to win an intersection if the Defender is coming.

Where did they say that? Last press release I read stated production was ending due to emissions. 2011 110 USW

One of the reasons I perhaps should have said - If it was just because of an engine emissions they would change the engine in the defender bearing in mind they are referring to new emissions rules of 2020.
