Remapping td5. Need more air.
I tried remapping my Defender 90 td5 04/05 a couple of months ago. Was very happy for a while. Then remapper from Bell Auto Services made me aware of black smoke. We took off the centre part of the snorkel, but nothing changed. He checked the air flow meter, which was fine. I think he used a nanocom or something. And it says its peeking at 500. He said 600 is where you want to be. Any thoughts on this issue? Is the snorkel the problem? It was such fun driving a slightly faster and stronger Defender.

Thanks guys. Peter

You can try removig the centrifugal fan thing that's inside the air box (it's on this forum somewhere), where the main intake pipe goes into the airbox, it's clipped in there.

Once you pull it out you'll need to seal up the small holes that are left (From the clips). Doing this made a little bit of difference on my 110.

would bypass the snorkel and see , its know that with a snorkeler you off-set some of the improvements ... Postmanpat

Do test with the top off the air box, this will tell you if it is worth messing about with the intake system.

Slightly low boost pressure can also keep the maff reading down!

Does your Td5 have a catalytic converter? If so, it could be the issue of low MAF and turbo values, especially if you've done all the checks on the intake (cleaned intercooler, checked intake hoses, removed or checked EGR, new air filter, checked intake for blockages before air filter, have a known working MAF installed, etc.). Not all Td5s had cats though.

My '03 Td5 cat was totally blocked... and if the air can't get out, it can't get in either. I had low MAF values and lack of turbo pressure, and fixing this restored things to normal. You can check if yours has a cat by looking just aft of the front wheel, passenger side (on RHD). Yellow arrow points to it in the photo. Not a bad job to check/clean or replace it, can post more info about doing so if it'll help.
