Lights on warning buzzer.
I've left my lights on a couple of times on returning home. To date I've been lucky, different neighbours have spotted my muppetry and warned me. My question is: how difficult is it to fit a 'YOU LEFT YOUR LIGHTS ON PLONKER', buzzer to the defender. I'm handy with a soldering iron but I would need an idiots guide to how to wire up, if anyone can point me to the kit and the how to. Thanks all.

All it would need is two relay, buzzer and two wires into the steering column plastics. One for the ignition 1st stage and another for the sidelights/headlight.

Wire the sidelight feed into one relay and the ignition into the other. If the relay for the sidelight is normally open and the relay for the ignition is normally closed then when your ignition is off and the sidelights are on the buzzer will sound Wink

(Currently doing a Masters in electrical and mechanical engineering) I think it will work! Razz William

Easier with one relay (although you could get away with none )

Earth for the buzzer from the door switch circuit, picked up behind windscreen trim on drivers side.

Live from side light circuit.

When the lights are on and you open the door the buzzer will sound.

Use a relay if you want to stop the buzzer sounding when the engine is running.

Thanks guys, I have a good quality buzzer in the garage so I think I'll have a go myself.

Go beyond, I've never used a relay before, what type, make, size should I use? Stepping beyond my comfort zone here Laughing

Thanks again for the info. Thumbs Up

You need a 5 pole automotive (12v) relay - Ebay or similar

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-PIN-12V-40A-Au...5d3350eb86

The coil part will have an earth on one side (85) and an ignition live circuit on the other (86)

Of the remaining 3 poles on the relay you need the 'common' pole (30) to be connected to the side light circuit and the 'normally closed' pole (87a) to be connected to the live of the buzzer (the earth of the buzzer goes to the door switch earth)

This means that with the ignition off the circuit is completed on the live side (when the sidelights are on) and the opening of a door will sound the buzzer

With the ignition on the relay is energised and breaks the live side of the circuit and so opening the door with the sidelights on will not sound the buzzer

Hope that all makes sense.
