A faint whistle - engine speed related
A couple of days ago I started hearing a slight high pitched two tone whistle between 1500 and 2000 rpm which mostly occurs when you take your foot off the pedal to slow down. At first I thought it was transmission related but I think its engine / turbo possibly. We're on hols in Co. Fermanagh at the moment so everyday the 110 has had a bit of a caning.

I did a search under 'turbo whistle' and there are various threads concerning manifold warp/gasket problems and hoses but a common observation is that the noise is a bit like an ambulance siren - which mine isn't. Maybe I ought to wait and see if it gets any louder. Has anyone else had this ? Cheers

Sounds like a leaking turbo gasket to me.

If it were gasket related would it not make noise all of the time?
Would there not be a drop in power from such a leak.
Rossy said "which mostly occurs when you take your foot off the pedal to slow down. "
When you take your foot off the pedal your revs drop so the vehicle is quieter. Maybe it is standard turbo whistle not normally audible owing to road noise from the wide tyres and the engine noise.
Would James French not have noticed anything untowards turbo gasket wise when they test drove it?
I only hear the turbo when I ease off the power and things quieten down.
A leak would imply a pressure drop which would effect power. If you don't notice any difference when overtaking I'd say all is O.K.
If there was a leak in the gasket would you not be able to detect this at the gasket? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

My goodness all you lot are trying to put the fear of god into him think with what "could" be wrong. Shocked
Mine does the same in the same way also, it's the turbo spooling down if you ask me when the revs drop off the engine noise is reduced and the turbo is more audible for this reason. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I hope you're right custom90steve ! Sounds like the right answer to me Laughing I only mentioned it because I haven't heard it before and like most Def2 guys I have a sixth sense for wierd and unusual noises that weren't there before. In 2 years and 32k kms it only started a couple of days ago. Funny, in my last motor a lack of audible turbo whistle meant something was wrong !

If you feather the throttle in a gear for example 4th is a good one you will notice it on flat ground. Just a faint tap and then off and that'll likely be when you notice. I always find it's when the revs drop and when not under load. So always flat ground or slightly heading downhill. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

A leaking gasket is hardly scary! Wink

It cost around 15 with new nuts and about an hour of my time to fix.
