Discovery 1.222:1 transfer box gears
Hi all

I'm thinking about some upgrades to my 90, and am thinking about fitting the Discovery 1.222:1 high range gears or complete Disco transfer box to increase the gearing and drop the revs on the motorway.

My only concern is that as I'm running 265/75R16 tyres, that the gearing will be too high and the engine (Td5 un-chipped) won't be able to pull properly. Does anyone have any experience of a 90 with 265/75 tyres and the 1.222:1 gears?

Cheers,

Martin

Not sure the 20 year old axles and props will cope - plus it's not a factory Td5 install so I'm not sure that chipping is a good idea really Confused

I had a 300 tdi N reg with Disco transfer box and 265/75/16 BFG AT and it went well, however I also fitted a bigger intercooler and tweaked the fuel pump Rolling Eyes

Give your site sponsor a ring, if he wont do you a deal, well I don't know. Andy at Allisport did mine and a top job he did, Andy and Peter at Bell auto Services have shared their knowledge before, it is Andys 90 that features on Petes web site.

You could have it chipped to stage one for a mild gain to help pull the bigger wheels and i could add somoe more torque at the top end to pull the new gears better.

A milder gain and not balls out should be fine even on older axles and a converted car.

saying all that ,y td5 pulls the same size tyres with a GKN no problems in standard form with mymap switched off.

Regards pete

I really can't risk a remap until the drivetrain is upgraded - it would need a pair of Td5 axles and new props (currently have drum rears).

Any further input on the 1.222 gears much appreciated Mr. Green

Ahh yes sorry typos, i agree then , i recon best to change to the 24 slpines before tuning.

The TD5 power and bigger tyres are probabaly maxing them old axles out as is.
Shame i didnt know because i just sold my old 1989 90 and i could have took the late model TD5 axles of and done you a swap before i sold it.

Just fit a pair of late axles, if you have a budget for this let me know and I will find a pair of axles for you, if you need them fitting we can also do this for you, that old drum brake back axle needs chucking in the scrap metal, toooooo much maintenance and the discs stop sooooo much better.

We have built lots of Defenders over the years so an axle swap is no big job for us.

Give me a call Martin and we can have a chat about it.
