Always park car in gear too. |

Yes I always press the clutch pedal when starting, always have done this, as far as I can remember with all manual vehicles I have driven, and like some others I always leave in gear when parked up.

Quite a lot of agricultural and plant machines need the clutch depressed when starting to open the starter inhibitor switch. I have allways put the clutch down on everything, if it has one, to start.

I always press the clutch too. As said, old agricultural stuff I used to drive needed it, and my old motorbike needed the clutch lever pulled in.
Often park in gear (as well as the handbrake) so it's just second nature. better IMO to do that than assume that the vehicle is in neutral. yes, i know you only need to check the gearstick, but things can get knocked/pulled etc. |

I think the old classic confusion is creeping into some of these replies.
When the clutch is IN it is engaged When the clutch is OUT it is disengaged. |

Copied from Owners Handbook.
1. Insert the black key into the starter switch and turn to position II. 2. Wait until the glow plug warning indicator extinguishes. The waiting time will vary according to engine temperature. 3. Fully depress the clutch pedal and turn the starter switch to position III to operate the starter motor. Release the key as soon as the engine starts. If the engine stalls or fails to start, you must return the starter switch to position I before attempting to restart. SWMBO's FL2 won't start unless the clutch pedal is depressed. I believe this is a feature of many cars but not the Defender? 1970 Series 2A 88"

everything I have ever driven gets started with clutch pedal depressed. Some need it due to inhibitor switches, others need it as they have been left in gear, and others need it due to marginal starting ability so far less load on the started when not turning at least some of a cold gearbox. |
