Mantec roof bars - too much mastic in the rain channels

Evening guys

Today i had difficulty fitting three Mantec roof bars to my 2012 Utility. I found the mastic in the roof gutters to be uneven to the point where in some places its level with the top of the gutter, and then within a few inches it runs down to the depth you would expect for a channel. I want to fit a clam tent to the rains but the rails are so uneven Its not possible.

Has anybody else had this problem when fitting roof racks etc?

Same on mine mate and when you clamp the rack down it digs into the mastic

Is it only a problem with Mantec. I want some but have also seen Thule & Rhino that look good. Also the same on mine, as Steve said when clamping rack / bars down it digs into the mastic.

Yeah I have the same with my Thule bars!! Taken the paint off the mastic from being clamped down!!!!!

The mastic/ dumdum stays elastic whereas the paint on top of the mastic is brittle.

Clamp any roof bar into the rain gutter then the foot will dig into the mastic and this is likely to cause the paint to fractured. OK whereas this may look unsightly when viewed from above it does not seem to have any detrimental effect.

The narrower the foot the more likely it is to dig in.

Yes roof racks will also dig in to the mastic.

Whereas the cracked paint in the rain gutter may look unsightly to some people, it could be argued that roof bars/rack dug into the mastic is beneficial. Reason being that the bars etc are less likely to 'walk' on rough roads or when they get knocked by tree branch.
