Trouble is what if the fancy stuff needs a clean up? Some of us use our Defenders for work / dirty stuff aswell as trying to keep it looking nice. The Alcantara is very nice but I reckon it'd be a pain to keep in top nick when dogs shake muck onto the head lining. Laughing

Had a steering wheel & race seats trimmed in alcantara. Originally, I was concerned over the same as well as general wear & tear. 12 years later both are wearing and looking really good dispite being well used. There may be different qualities of alcantata but I certainlkly would not dismiss it out of hand; and I think I would rather have it than the OEM lining which has always looked cheap and fragile.

That's the reason why Alcantara costs the same as good leather qualities per squaremeter. You get the perfect look like suede leather, but it's less sensitive to water, mud and wearing. You can always clean it even with mild detergents and a lot of water without getting stains. There are quiet a lot cheaper lookalike suede cloths on the market, but they look cheap and artificial in most cases, nothing compares to Alcantara. For this reason it's used very often for highly priced jackets instead of leather too.

There is only one Alcantara. It's a trade mark not a description of the material. Others materials get sold as Alcantara but they are not.

There are other high quality materials emerging and time will tell if these earn the same respect.

Many high end manufactures seem to be using the Alston Technosuede that IRB have on their head linings and it's British made as well.

Hi Ian,

Is your process the same as 'flocking' ?

For what I have seen the ones Ian sells are a suede like fabric and look like they were always supposed to.

Flocking is a spray on process. Great on dash parts to keep down the glare but I don't know why anyone would want it anywhere else.

@ me@td5.org did you manage to get a headlining from Ian? I've tried pm & e mail for one & got no reply?

I've found a Land Rover Monthly that has an article on fitting a fiber glass headlining (not black) in a 110. The cover has a Twisted modded grey-silver Defender pic. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender
