fitting a pre fuel filter
I am thinking of fitting a Stanadyne FM100 30 micron pre fuel filter. I have gotten conflicting advice yes fit one to protect the motor, no it might damage or at least put the engine into limp mode if the filter gets blocked, if I fit one it will have the in dash alert light alerting I have water etc in the fuel, as well as a hand pump to purge any air in the system . I am thinking of fitting it in front on the OME filter, any advice will be greatly appreciated as I,m not sure which way to go. I have been told by L/ROVER AUST that it shouldn't effect my warranty hopefully never have to test that. series 3 swb gone . o5 defender gone

Hi we have fitted several Racor filter/water traps to Trany Defenders with no problems. We fit them in the rear of the right hand rear wheel arch and plumb them in before the main filter. The only problem we have is the pipe size is not standard for the fittings so we have special ferules made. System must be air tight as Tranys use suction for fuel supply.

Which model Racor are you fitting?

Cheers,

Tim

(By the way, we prefer the term trans-fender Smile )

Should be OK, but is it necessary to do it?

LR Arduous servicing includes draining the fuel filter (Stanadyne are OEM for the Puma filter application anyway) and there is a water in the fuel warning flag within the powertrain ECU. Really, if you do need this, then there is an issue somewhere like contamination in the tank already.

As mentioned by MAXS90 if you are going to do it, the Puma sucks up fuel from the tank using the LP part of the fuel pump on the side of the engine, so it needs to be airtight.

Any further update on this? Did you fit a pre-filter.

I'm interested as I'm heading to Morocco for a 3000 km Raid/Competition in April. Everyone who's going (No Defender owners) says it's necessary as every morning there is water in the fuel bowl due to condensation and poor fuel.
