I'm considering removing the spare wheel on my puma 110. I move boats around and it will make hooking up easier. It will also remove the weight off the back door, which we know by experience eventually give up the fight. The crunch came today when parked across a slight incline, the door closed on my little girl -luckily she wasn't hurt but it's an accident waiting to happen.
Locally there's not an issue but what do I do on longer (road only) trips? Don't want to chuck a wheel in the back or have to bolt it back on each time. What's the chance of getting a flat on general grabbers and is using a couple of cans of fix-o-flat as stupid as I think? |

Apolgies in advance too tempting to resist......Will that be a 'two wheel capacity swing away carrier with two gas struts keeping it open' perchance????

Good point but will that help with hooking up 5-10 boats a day? It's probably still in the way. I'd prefer to find a get me home solution to a flat tire.

Some people use the roof rack for the spare.
It is more dificult to put in and put out but can solve your problem with the boat. I had the same problem with the rear door with my kids and was solved in a 99% with the swing away carrier (Mantec type) Does not have a gas truth, but the system have more resistance to be closed and therefore support more inclination and closed slowly. Depending on how much effort you are prepared to put in to a flat tyre I am a motorcyclist and have a small compact kit that can repair a holed tyre and reinflate it afterwards. Saved my life on a Sunday in France. It involves the insertion of a rubber rivet to the tyre. You need to know where the hole is to repair it though. But couple that kit together with a can of the Fix O Flat you mentioned and I think it would be 'as good as it could get' without a spare. Any decent motorcycle shop can supply the kit that will give you about half a dozen repairs and enough small co2 bottles for a few inflations for about £30-£35. Thanks for that! I'm also looking at slime which I know and depend on in mountain biking. They supply a kit which includes a pump for 4x4 tyres

I wouldnt use the slime stuff unless you can repair the tyre yourself as most tyre places wont touch a tyre after its had slime aplied so I am told.

Naaa, slime is fine... it washes right out. It the foam in the cans that can be a problem.

If your vehicle is designed to have a spare wheel and you don't have one you are only entitled to a 10 mile tow instead of full recovery if you get a puncture or blowout and call out a breakdown club.
