warped brakes
guys (and gals)

do you experience what feels like the judder of warped brakes when slowing down......I mean just that little hint of it - nothing major just the feel of something isnt right?

is it a defender trait / 'they all do that sir' ?

I'm confident the brakes are fine (although that's how it feels).....

I'm thinking transmission again. so no juder what so ever..........I wouldn't expect there to be any hence I've raised the question.

thanks for the response....

could also be an unbalanced wheel if it only happens at certain speeds?

just under braking (normal braking - not heavy).

Catherham,

I sometimes notice the same, but not only on the 110.

How long are you parked after having this? I have both the 110 and MB egg-tired when coming back from a week business trip and now in the colder temps it takes more time to heat the tires so they form back to round + colder is more stiff anyway. (so it feels worse when colder while it is not)

Dont rule tires out yet as said above. How fast is the vibration? Gearboxes tend to turn quite fast to be causing judders, they more make whines and whistles to my experience.

A wheel rotates at rough approx 400rpm at 60km/h which is a vibration of 6.6 pulses per second x2 for egg tires (so 4.4 pulses per second at 20km/h)
Diff and propshaft times 3 or 3.5 without looking something up
And i guess all inside the gearbox faster but depending on engine speed.

Smile

You may also get this phenomenon if you are running mud tyres such as BFG Mud T/As and they are starting to wear and or crenellate.

Swapping them round so that they rotate the other way will often help (note though that tyre 'experts' say you shouldn't do this for some reason).

If your defender is still under warranty ask the dealer to check all the discs for runout with a dial gauge,if its out of warranty try and borrow a dial gauge and check them yourself,it does,nt take much runout (warping) to give a pulsing effect through the brake pedal when braking.Maximum disc runout given in haynes manual is 0.15mm. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Could well be warped discs. I had the front discs warp on my 07 Puma just as I arrived at Portsmouth for the overnight ferry to France.

It was only noticable braking at speeds over 50mph - LRA gave me the details of the dealer in Nantes as I did want them to come out and the dealer was wating for me to arrive, came out for a test drive with me, confirmed my diagnosis, told me they'd be ok till I got back to Blighty (they didn't have any in stock), gave me a coffee and sent me on my way. Only hiccup was my very limited French and their complete lack of English Laughing

When I got home the dealer swopped them out and fitted new pads and I never had a problem after that. John

well I don't think its the tyres - standard conti tyres (I think - can't recall what they are but they're the standard fit tyre).

although it feels like warped discs I'd be really suprised as I drive like miss daisy. none the less no harm in getting them measured. however I have to admit this is the least of my problems at the moment but will check in due course.

thank you.

Good article here explaining why a diagnosis of warped discs may not actually be the real issue:

or even this:
