Steering wheel removal - now have DSC light

I took my steering wheel off over the weekend to have a look at the indicator self cancelling mechanism which has been playing up slightly. Having replaced the wheel (but nothing else) I now find that the front right (I think) brake is grabbing when I pull away, and I have a constant DSC warning light on the dash.

Some research suggests I have upset the steering angle sensor, and it may need to be re-calibrated. Is this likely? The wheel was on straight before I took it off, and is on straight again now. Obviously I have moved the self cancelling ring a bit to check operation, but thought I had put it all back on as it was.

Help and guidance much appreciated!

That sounds like you have moved the angle sensor when you have taken the wheel off, it might be you have turn take it off again and turn 360 degrees to see if it knocks the light off and doesn't grab. Obviously if you cannot remember which way you have turned it, you might be turning it the wrong way

I had it on a 15 plate when fitting an aftermarket wheel and it was trial and error. Never heard of having to recalibrate it.

Hopefully someone else will be along to back me up.

Yep, this happens if you don't keep the sensor stationary when you're removing / replacing the wheel as the DSC thinks the steering wheel is point somewhere else!
Trial and error normally sorts it but it's a faff constantly whipping the wheel on and off though!

I believe some of the aftermarket diagnostic units let you reset it?

2013 Defender 110 V8 Petrol XS CSW Auto Orkney Grey

Sorry to resurrect an old post. I have removed my steering wheel and I now have the DSC warning light come on once I get up to around 20mph, the steering pulls and a slight loss of power, it resets when the ignition is off. Does the angle sensor have to be reset with software, or can I do it myself as camelman mentions, and if so how would I do this?

you can do it manually with trial and error but it's fiddly!

I believe you can monitor the setting thru an OBD port reader but I haven't tried it.

I had this issue with my partners 2014 defender - it tried the ‘trial and error’ thing but that didnt work very well, however having the OB2 reader from our BAS remap gave me an option to reset the steering wheel sensor and all has been good since.

2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Santorini Black

I had the same issue on my 2015 110 XS when I removed the steering wheel to complete an ICE upgrade. The problem was with the very sensitive steering wheel position sensor that had gone out of adjustment. I tried many times to manually resolve to no avail. The eventual solution was to use the GAP IID OBD tool which has a steering wheel position sensor re-calibrate option. Takes no time at all with that and bingo, the DSC warning light disappears!

Thanks for this, I tried my basic OBD reader but does not have the steering angle sensor calibration, so I guess it's a visit to a garage to sort this out
