Driver demand problem 1 fault
Hi guys,

Next problem - When accelerating above 50mph or increasing power on a hill I get a shudder and a loss of power, the vehicle drives fine under 50mph (50mph is not an exact speed when the fault appears but a approximate speed).
I have new fuel pump and lines fitted, wategate is free, New MAF & MAP sensors fitted.
Nanocom says Driver demand problem 1 is that the accelerator pedometer?
Does this sound like my fault?

Driver demand is the gas pedal. Look into lived data with non running engine and ignition on - when slowly pressing down the gas pedal, two driver demand voltages should change continuously, without any sudden changes. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

OK did some testing today.

Plugged in the nanocom went to the Accelerator page which had 4 boxes Accel 1, Accel 2, Accel 3, Accel voltage.

I'm guessing this is the 3 track type??

Anyhow turned ignition to on - slowly pressed the accelerator and Accel 1 went from 0.857 up to 4.87 not sure of the exact figures or what Accel 2 and 3 are measuring? Voltage feed was over 5 volts.

Went for a drive different story, Accel 1 didn't want to go over 3.2 volts and dropped voltage when accelerating got back home turned of the engine slowly pressed the pedal and it stopped at 3.2 volts. Turned off the vehicle reset everything turned back on slowly pressed the pedal and Accel 1 went upto 4.87 volts?

Looking at the pedal is there a cover missing?

I inspected the the wires the best I could but I saw nothing obvious the wires then disappear into the loom.

I'm still thinking I need a replacement but getting this part looks difficult it seems to be on back order everywhere.

I'm thinking of a second hand part for now does anyone know where I can get this part.

Landrover defender 110 2003 td5 is my vehicle.

More than likely the wiring to the pedal than the actual pedal, common enough fault. I would have pedals if you need one though. Some are what the call 2 track and some are 3 track, you can change this in diagnostics though.

Two way gas pedal - supply voltage approx. 5 V, track 1 + track 2 = supply voltage, track 1 voltage is rising when gas pedal is pressed down, track 2 voltage is lowering. Track 3 is there only to help, just switch to 2 way gas pedal in engine settings (next to injector codes), to eliminate (for test only) the track 3.
Voltage range should be 0,5 to 4,5 V approx., and withnout any sudden changes - it must change smooth when pressing or releasin the gas pedal.
Any problem with gas pedal results in idle RPM only - this is security feature of engine ECU. When ECU is not 100% sure in what position the gas pedal is, it just switches to safe response, running engine only on idle RPM. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

As noted, historically issues with accelerator output signal are related to the wiring loom and not the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) itself.

The solution, a lot less financially impacting than a replacement TPS, though more labour intensive, is an 'electrical bypass' by way of an overlay harness. A DIY job. Can source a TPS connector kit and ECU connector terminals from PaulMc, a valued member of this forum, who also happens to offer these items on fleabay:

There is a pre-wired version of the TPS connector on offer, saves some of the work, but the long term reliability of the wire splicing is questionable at best.

Can you be more specific with your symptoms? When this occured do you lose power to the extent it won't go beyond idle or is it more like a "Limp mode" that responds to the accelerator, but not very well?

I'm getting the latter symptom particularly on a long hill where the car responds normally until suddenly it doesn't (feels like a limp mode and then can't maintain more than about 60mph. As far as I can tell this is not pedal related as my numbers look normal on the nanocom. I'm yet to look at the wastegate, but a new MAF didn't fix it (old one was def faulty).

It's more like a limp mode you get to about 60 I only get to 50mph but I guess its the revs not the speed.

If yours is a defender td5 then the above link fix is well worth trying given the cheap cost.
