Defender 110 Puma Starter Motor
Evening all,

My starter motor went today. Started great, heard this rattle coming from the bell housing are/passenger footwell but wasn't sure exactly where. 10 miles down the road, battery light came on. arrived at shopping centre.. no restart. Thought the battery was knackered Bought a new one. Still no cranking.. RAC called. The mechanic checked the voltage at battery and power to starter motor. All readings correct.. Bumped it and got home, thankfully!

So my question is, which brand of starter motor do people recommend? Looking on LRParts, there's 3 options. Aftermarket, OEM or Denso. My usual approach is buy cheap by twice. Is this correct when it comes to starter motors?

Thanks in advance!

You are probably best sticking with, LR, Denso or Bosch in that order.
LR probably being one of those brands. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

If you plan on keeping the Defender, then go a reputable brand.

As for changing the starter motor. I prefer the slower way of doing it, which is removing the coolant hoses above the starter motor and feeding the starter through the top. You can then go under the car and twist the starter 90 degrees into position and do the bolts up from underneath. Just connect the live and earth before bolting the starter rock solid. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

Britpart is the brand of last resort. I'd sooner fit a starting handle.

^^^^ I was waiting for that response. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

It is true though, most Britpart items are not always that great.
I once had a light lense from them, the plastic was so brittle it was broken out of the box as I opened it it was that poor a quality product.
So I tend to always avoid that brand too, there are a few items that are okay.
Starter motors are not one of the good items. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I would buy dense or similar. Avoid britpart if at all possible even more so as this is not a job you will want to do again in a hurry. Cheers
