I can't be the only one judging by the number of comments on dirty clutch fluid and sludge in defender clutch reservoirs..
Its not inspiring any confidence even though its working fine atm and not loosing fluid..
When syringed into a jar it just looks like a dirty liquid

How old is the master? I had a good quality brand master go in about 8 months or so. The piston was not deburred right, and scraped the bore very badly until it started leaking. But cant remember if the fluid changed colour as yours is doing. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks.. This is the annoying part about all this
. The complete clutch system has been replaced..mechanical and hydraulic.. Flushed.. Bled and working fine other than the fluid contaminating rather quickly for my liking..
The only bit that is original is the pipework from master cylinder to bell housing attachment..
Sorry you asked how old.. Its about a month now since I did the work

I hope you do not have same or similar issue as I had.
I was so disappointed with what should had been a quality master cylinder, especially because it felt like I had to sell a kidney as I was still a student at that time.

I would remove the clutch pedal cover (6 screws) and pull off the rubber dust cap off the cylinder just to see if anything is abnormal on that side. Should be clean and dry being just a month or so. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

And yet more investigation..
I got out an electronic microscope and had a look at some fluid from one of the jars I've been syphoning it into.. Just on a sheet of paper and a hair of my arm for some sort of scale.. Don't know what the magnification is.. Have it a little stir with a tweezer leg
It wasn't a lot of help.. The stuff is black and in suspension.. And I'm still thinking master cylinder seal material..

More updates..
I ordered one of those brake fluid tester pens as a mentioned above.. Seems reasonable and did show my brake fluid was due a change so that's done👍
On the clutch front the fluid is still getting contaminated with debris..

Not as bad but I've not done the miles recently..
I've put new seals in the old girling master cylinder and put that on to see if that makes any difference.. All nice and clean again..

In the longer term I came across a thread where a cast iron rather than an aluminium master cylinder was used.. It needs a bit fettling to allow fitting to the defender but I can't see why it shouldn't be possible, so work in progress forthe longer term..

Ohhh and I've sent a sample of contaminated fluid off to see what the lab has to say👍..
I'll get back when I hear something..

Got a report back from the lab and in essence they say the fluid is contaminated with silicone debris.. Everything else appears to be as expected..and normal.. They even just class it as a caution and just change at the next service interval.. Water content is again as expected at less than 0.1%
I expected the debris to be styrene or butadiene based from the master cylinder seals.. I'm wondering if hydraulic seals can be silicone based🤔..
Anyhow that's the update, other than to say that the original girling master cylinder I Re sealed with a kit and put back on a week or so ago is not showing any signs of the debris that appeared in the new master cylinder..

The original girling master cylinder that I Re sealed and put back on in a bid to get to the bottom of the fluid contaminatiom didn't really improve matters.. Still getting that black debris in the master cylinder reservoir..

I keep asking folk who own these trucks... I've had a few suggest the rubber flexible hose could be a source of the contamination.. I personally can't see that but I bought the pioneer flexible hose from master cylinder to bell housing and replaced the original metal and rubber hose today so time will tell on that one..
On the plus the new hose is a shocking lime green😎😂.

A bit posotive and promising news on the issue I've been having with the clutch fluid contaminating..
As I said above I replaced the original rigid metal and rubber flexi on the clutch system with a pioneer braided hose.. I couldn't see the rubber flexi been responsible for the contamination, but was pleasantly surprised when I checked the reservoir today.. No sign of the black debris that has been appearing..
Fingers crossed and I'll keep an eye on it..

Well about a month on and while much improved there is a bit debris lying in the base of the reservoir..

That can only be getting generated by master or slave cyl seals as everything else has now been changed..
I'll have to live with that for now as other jobs need attention
I've syphoned and refilled again

I'm still watching this and checked again yesterday.. So it's still accumulating debris in the bottom of the master cylinder, all be it's a lot less than the early days..
