So what's so good about swepco ? Is it that its just reassuringly expensive ? What unexpected noticable difference does it make over more inexpensive brands ? Likeomg, you seem to have had a favourable experience with it, how has it worked better than others ?
Please share your experiences guys.

I’ve been using Swepco for a few years now and will continue to do so as it was recommended to me but ’reassuringly expensive’ is a fair description. WARNING.

Thanks MK, what exactly is that telling me about how it's better than other oil ? Sorry, I don't know much about oil properties !

I do not know if it is better, but both viscosities (at 40 and 100C) are way way lower than a typical 80W-90 (let´s say 20 and 150 cSt vs 7.19 and 37.9 cSt). So it is something radical, different testing method or there is a mistake in their publication. I cannot tell. Puma 110" SW

Interesting ! But could lower viscosity not be a bad thing ? Surely then it's acting like a less viscous grade of oil than the recommended ? Could the same thing not be achieved by just putting cheaper thinner viscosity oil in there in the first place ?

It certainly seems to be a minefield and I'm unconvinced that Swepco oil is worth the additional expense especially as it appears to act like a grade of oil not recommended and so could be detrimental !

I'll continue with Ashcrofts recommendations.

What makes one oil better than another?
I think to the normal user, primarily would be the sound an engine, or since the subject is about gear oil, a diff would make. In case of a gearbox, you would add the easy of gear change.

When the LT77 was released, Rover specified ATF for ease of gear change. Its not because its was a better oil to protect bearings, synchros or gears!

And as mentioned earlier, what warranted a change if viscosities in pre and post Td5 LT230s Laughing Perhaps that extra 0.001mpg? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Ashcrofts suggest a EP80/90 oil. I did ask if a GL4 or GL5 spec and the answer was EP80/90. 1999 Defender TD5 110

You can get EP80W-90 in GL4 or GL5 flavors. All depends on the concentration of sulfur content. GL5 has about the double of such EP additives. Puma 110" SW

I did spot GL4 and GL5 spec. I think it will be GL4 for transfer case and GL5 for the front diff. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Sorry for the late reply,

Gearshifts are a lot smoother for me, my gearbox is only about 25 - 30k miles with a short shift and bowler gearstick and it's a nicer experience shifting now.

Diffs with the winchester ATB setup i had, previously there was some noise but since making the change it's a lot more silent.

Dave from Ashcrofts told me this was OK for his ATBs in defender axles

"Castrol Axle EPX 80W-90 Mineral Car Gearbox Oil GL5"

so that is what I have been using with no issues DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

It turned out the published specs from the reseller are wrong.

I can post the specs sheet if it is allowed by the forum.

In the end I went for Comma GL4 and GL5 oils. Cheers for assistance one and all. 1999 Defender TD5 110
