Just bought a Lightweight
Evening all. I’m a longtime member of FullFatRR (on my third L322) but I find myself as a new owner of a Lightweight. I always wanted one (probably since riding around in yellow ones as an air cadet) and if there was a perfect time to get one, this isn’t it but it’s here (or being fettled elsewhere in fact) as I speak. 1974 S3 24V FFR.

I’m not a rivet counter (much respect to those with show cars though, love them) and it’s not perfect but I’d like it to be useable without having to worry about it. The idea is a weekend fun car, pub, kids out for picnics and the odd tip run. That kind of thing. If I do more than 2000 miles a year, I’ll be surprised.

It’s currently having rear seats and belts and an electronic ignition fitted. Needs some minor chassis welding to be done in the summer (no point now) and a serious dose of Fabsil to the tilt but that’s about it. Photos to follow when it gets home.

Any top tips please?

I also need to source some new 7.50-16s (times 5) - any deals out there? Also JW911 on FullFatRR

Many thanks. I did work experience with the Red Arrows in 1990 so I suspect I may have ridden in a red one as well. Cool Also JW911 on FullFatRR

It was the last one built

Now going down the tyre wormhole. I want to go tubeless so will need new rims to give a better choice of 7.50x16s. This is a long term project but I want it to be safely drivable for the next couple of years and the tyres are the only things letting it down.

Anyone know where I can get a decent set of 5.5 original tubeless steels without paying a fortune? Don’t mind refurbing them as they’ll inevitably be white. Also JW911 on FullFatRR

I can't help much with Lightweights, but welcome to D2N. I look forward to seeing some photos. Thumbs Up

You can get new steel rims and 7.5 tyres relatively cheaply new from 4x4tyres, otherwise they frequently come up on eBay etc but unknown history. Here is a good place to ask too. James

Thanks. Those have been sold now but looks like I’ve got hold of some alternatives. Also JW911 on FullFatRR
