Fuel pump whining / fuel gauge inaccurate
My new Landy I've noticed the fuel pump is very loud /screaming. Previous owner/farmer, generously filled it up using own on site tanks, so I hoped it was 'just' contaminated fuel and the car was complaining...

I've changed the fuel filter (it seems clean) and I've just been using it. I added millers diesel additive to the farmers fuel and slowly but surely replenished 3/4 of premium diesel into it.

I've noticed the fuel pump is quite normal sounding when car is cold, seems to materialise when the car has been on an outing i.e anything up to temperature etc. At which point it's screaming constantly. If vehicle is switched off for prolonged period of time, the noise goes away. it returns after a short while if used again.

I've fuel purged the system many times and no further joy. No diesel is leaking that I can see or smell.

Other odd symptoms, the fuel gauge when full reads accurately until it hits approx 3/4, at which point it seems to be all over the place i.e. becomes slow to read on startup or hovers in the orange section (fuel light works at least). I've ignored it and I've done approx 200 miles since. Now the fuel gauge is under half and has become generally accurate again i.e in line with other TD5's I'm accustomed to.

The car always starts first time and performs reasonably well (no odd smoke). It's less spritely at times and so I've ordered a replacement MAF, but alas I'm sure that won't cure my problem. Essentially it drives fairly well.

I noticed the fuel breather pipe on the passenger side rear wheel has several major splits in it, but not sure if that's going to cause this?

I'm booked late January as the earliest the specialist can review. In the meantime I wonder if there's anything I can do to help it along? Or is it just a case of waiting for them to solve this.

I'm debating whether to fill it up to the max again prior to it going in in case they have to drop the tank. I unsure if I'll get the miles in by then too. But equally I do not know if putting more fresh fuel in will help it along / unsure how the fuel gauge would react.

First off, how irritating Rolling Eyes

Second, before you fill to the max fix that breather hose in the rear wheel well, diesel will leak out of it if full and wheel well water and grit may enter through the splits as well. The worst case is if you ford deep water you might end up with a half tank of muddy pond water.

As for the gauge not reading consistently and the fuel pump noise I would be thinking of checking connections and earths to begin with. If that does not sort the problem then I would be thinking that the fuel pump itself is at fault both in terms of the pump noise and the senders variable resistor. In which case only fit a VDO pump.

Thank you and I already informed the specialist re: VDO and they've advised they would only fit OEM or Genuine etc.

I will do so, although I had filled it up before I read the post but fortunately no diesel leaking anywhere. It was all a bit dirty under the chassis so have cleaned around the chassis amongst various areas and will get to inspecting (also should make it more pleasant for the eventual specialist...)

The fuel gauge (currently in the threshold of being inaccurate) seems to fall as a result of touching the throttle.. Bizarre behaviour.

My MAF arrived and always surprises just how much of a difference it makes (of course unrelated but response has been great again).
